NASA declared an emergency after losing communication with space shuttle Columbia as the ship soared over Texas several minutes before its expected landing time Saturday morning.
The shuttle was carrying the first Israeli astronaut and six Americans, and authorities had feared it would be a terrorist target.
Fifteen minutes after the expected landing time, and with no word from the shuttle, NASA announced that search and rescue teams were being mobilized in Dallas and Fort Worth areas.

There is a video on tv now that shows a bunch of white thick streaks through the air above Dallas...we can only assume it's Columbia. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/frown.gif

No chance of that. Totally out of range of surface-air missiles.
Re-entry is the 2nd most risky phase of space flight, next to the launch phase.
This will doubtless set the entire space program back, once again, for some time to come, as did the Challenger disaster, 17 years ago, in 1986.
Lord, please be with the lost crew members. <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">quote:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><font face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif" size="2">Slipping the surly bonds of earth and touching the hand of God.</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>

I remember the Challenger incident. Shortly after I met the mother of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher on board the shuttle. Did you know the crew was alive the whole time during their fall back to earth? The initial explosion didn't kill or even knock them unconscious. A number of shuttle diagnostics or whatever were going on from inside all the way up until they hit the ground. Now that's scary shit. I would have taken the suicide pill the second after the shuttle exploded.

I heard about all that this morning. I was saddened but not really surprised. That space shuttle was more than 20 years old. They are the most complex machines built and they run on one of the most explosive fuels ever conceived.
In the end it won't matter whether NASA grounds their shuttles. It won't be long before commercial versions of those start going up and they'll end up being 10 times more efficient, just as safe (or safer) and quite a bit cheaper.
Hopefully they'll learn something valueble of that like they did with the Challenger accident though. Nothing sucks more than having good people die with nothing learned to prevent it happening again.

You have a point there. People are choosy about when they care if someone died. Thousands die in cars all the time and yet those are still called routine. One space shuttle blows up and everyone freaks out and starts getting extra-religious.
It's as if we're supposed to care more about these guys because they're pilots, doctors and soldiers.

I'm assuming that you live in BC Pickle, but you also have to keep in mind that the 7 astronauts died in view of anyone able to look vertically. Also, those astronauts bodies have been blown apart and are scattered over half of Texas. There have already been some very gruesome discoveries. Extremely gruesome infact.
Alio, the shuttle may have been built over 20 years ago, but these aren't regular airplanes. When they are maintained it's on a level unequaled in aviation history. In '99 Columbia was overhauled. That means they spent 17 months and tens of millions of dollars ripping it apart, checking EVERYTHING (sometimes microscopically) then retrofitting it with the "latest and greatest". That and the design may be "old", but it was decades ahead of it's time all things considered. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Yeah, I think they finally did upgrade the computers in the shuttle to 486's. NASA's track record for checking things microscopically isn't as good as they'd like you to think. They lost two Apollo mossions to electrical problems and Challenger to an o-ring that didn't like the cold. That's only counting the manned missions. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
Bush was right about some stuff though. Space travel is inherently very dangerous and those guys knew the risks. They were certainly damn brave. I hope they died painlessly (as in really fast).

Maybe now that America has found a new respect for human life they will be good christians and abandon their war plans.

apparantly during the take-off, a piece of something got ripped off the extra rocket or fuel tank things and clipped the wing of the orbiter, they arent sure whether that had anything to do with it or not, but also there were some dangerously high temperatures recorded soon before the incident, maybe the mystery "thing" managed to take out some of those heat-absorbing ceramic tile things with it...

Nah, you'd just have a pile of pagans doing the same things. Life is more peaceful when you teach everyone to read and think for themselves. Religion is the root of about half of all evil. The rest just comes from related things like greed, envy, lust, etc. Of course, since I figure religion is about half of evil I stay way away from it.

No, thats what their friends in the press say about them to attract gullible new members.
"Got to war to save lives"
Ahem, the Kurds that Iraq bombed are terrorists armed and trained by Israel and the USA (like the KLA we used as an excuse to 'save lives' in Serbia).
Im sure a lot of the more moronic americans will get a kick from a war against an enemy that cant fight back but I happen to know a lot of good american folk who are totally ashamed of the things their government does in their name.
The way I see it, the only countries Iraq is a threat to are Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Knowing a lot about those countries and the evil stuff that goes on there I would rather we arm Iraq and let them do as they please there in exchange for cheaper oil.
Let them get rid of those corrupt medieval minded regimes once and for all.

Negative Eugenics works to a degree. But the people who die don't seem too happy about it.

Prick :P
Saddam is an evil ruthless bastard, I hate him, but I admire the way he stands up to more powerful nations who, for all the pretending to have noble causes in mind are really only hell bent on exploiting Iraq economically and making sure Israel is the dominant force in the middle east. If Saddam was friendly to Israel and allowed western capitalists to move in and exploit his people the way so many dictator types around the globe do (in return for fat bank accounts in Switzerland) the USA and UK would be bullying Libya or Syria right now.
If they really thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction they wouldnt dare send troops there, witness North Korea.
