View Full Version : CD-ROM Dillemma

So my dad picks me up from school today and says "Umm... Steve, we have a problem." So of course I think that something horribly wrong has happened. I reluctantly inquire "What?" He then proceeds to tell me how he bought the Clone Wars expansion to Star Wars: Galactic Battle Grounds. He says when he put the installation disc in, it started to make noise. So he opened it up and the CD was mangled. Then he found out that the CD-ROM drive will no longer close. It goes in but comes right back out.
So I've said all that to plea for help in my situation. Of course, I would like to get a new drive (especially CD-RW!) but I'd rather not have ot spend any money. Fixing it would be ideal so any suggestions? If not, then does anyone have a recommendation of a cheap CD-RW drive? Thanks in advance. Good thing I have all the major consoles to occupy me in my time of despair http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

Most of the time you just have to replace the drive.

You mean the CD was mangled or the CDROM?
You can get CD-RW drives for $19 in the US (with rebate). More common is $39. I got a Pacific Data 48x12x48 for $29 at OfficeMax. IOW, they are less than a CDROM.
So look around at sales, even CompUsa has had them for those prices.

Yeah CD drives aren't that expensive. I wouldn't trust that CD drive again after it mangled that CD. :/

You guys and your blimmin incorrect terminlogy - CD and CDROM are the same thing! So you should of said "You mean the CD was mangled or the CDROM Drive?" http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm35.gif

If your profile is correct you live in the USA. That being the case, I think you are better off going to Office Max, Office Depot, CompuUsa, BestBuy, Circuit City, Staples and look for the rebate deals on the CD-RWs. Costco, Sams Club and WallMart also may have good deals, although I the least expensive I think was about $59 for a TDK ( which isn't bad for that drive).
I didn't look today, but in the past Ebay can't beat those deals - plus you can bring it back instantly if there's a problem and so forth. I'd never buy a used CD-RW. CDROMS are fine so long as it's not some junk name.
The reason I asked about CD vs CD-ROM is that hispeed drives can shatter the actual CDs http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

At least you didn't have to take apart your drive to get your CD back (which happens sometimes).

Just to clear up some issues...
It was the CD that got screwed up, not the drive. I am just going to buy a new one (CD-RW that is) and will prolly go shopping later this week. Thanks for all your help!
P.S. If anyone finds any phenomenal deals, post 'em!

I've never seen a CD shatter in a drive before.
Al, he already said he was getting a burner. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
Z-Saber, your dad buys Star Wars games? My dad won't buy any game for anything. When I was a kid he would sometimes buy me some educational games and he once bought me a Star Trek game, but that was like an RPG full of puzzles anyway.
So why didn't your dad just go buy another drive. If he can afford a car he can surely afford a CD-RW drive.

More than likely the drive that you had didnt have a thing wrong with it, if anything the CD that yer dad bought (not his fault by any strech) was defective, was out of balance or had a hairline crack in it or SOMETHING that made it just give way and wreck. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

Aliotroph?, I think that you thought my dad bought the game for me. It was for him! He plays games and such as well. The reason we didn't get a burner at first is because we wanted to save some money, but as soon as we saw some the prices we rushed out and bought it. Now it works fine and I've already made a few CDs and such. WOO!!!

That's good you guys got a CD burner. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif Making CD's is cool. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/cool.gif
I had a 8X CD drive when I had my P166 that didn't like a Unreal CD. It would grind and grind. It totally scratched up the area around the hole in the CD. Damned weird.

Some of the cheaper drives are damn dodgy. I've had computers that wouldn't read certain CDs for no reason at all.
Nah, I knew your dad bought the game for him. Still weird. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
