If I had that much money, I really don't think I would do too much computer wise, except maybe get a new monitor, and a bigger Hard Drive.

I would sooooooo find better things to do with money. Like pay off credit cards and buy us a new car! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

I had 2 zip drives fail and they destroyed 3 zips full of backed up files (this happened during a reinstall of windows and I needed my zip drive to work). I have no doubt that is where some of my levels went. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm21.gif

That's it sparky? Use your imagination! Try this on for size:

Dual 3.06ghz p4s I think this is possible
2gb rdram some boards will take that
2 200gb hds
radeon 9700 pro
auidgy 2
for sound it'll have 1000watt 6.1 surround sytem
the monitor will be a 57" HD projection tv

hmmm I was playing on alienware and managed to build a $10000 computer, I guess I'd settle for that if I had too.

BTW I have a new Alienware

Meh, the calendar probably ends cause they were too lazy to make it any bigger. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif

BTW, you guys think too small in terms of dream computers. If I had a million bucks I'd buy one of those IBM rigs where the CPUs come with 8MB L2 caches.

If I had a vastly larger amount of money however, I would buy this thing: IBM Bluesky System linky here (http://www.scd.ucar.edu/computers/gallery/ibm/bluesky/bluesky.html)

For those of you who don't want to read that too far, the specs work out like this:

-1216 IBM Power4 processors. Each running at 1.3GHz and capable of 4 instructions per cycle.
-6.323 teraflops computing capacity
-21+ terabytes of disk space.

Now hook that to a 7 storey 3D IMAX screen and you're set for some serious gaming - after you write your own drivers that is! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Hey Aliotroph?, maybe you can help me here. I'm a tad fuzzy on what exactly a flop is. When it says 6.3 teraflops, does that mean that the system can do 6.3 trillion floating point operations a second or what?

Course I start school for compsci in two months, but I'm a believer in more immediate gratification. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm4.gif

------------------
Desperate times call for halflings!

Aliotroph?
December 3rd, 2002, 11:24 AM
Yeah that's right. Flops stands for floating-point operations per second. That means if you only had one it would still be called flops, which is damn confusing. Just imagine doing 6.3 trillian per second though! It's fucking amazing!

And IBM is working on a computer that is supposed to surpass the petaflops mark, aka. a quadrillion floating-point operations per second. Apparenly that one is to be used for protein modelling and fun stuff like that.

Well SavageMessiah, I hope you like programming cause comp-sci is full of endless programming. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif And if you've done some beforehand it can be useful in the beginning because you will pick things up faster.

Yes, Aliotroph?, I do indeed like programming. Th only reason I don't do more of it on my own time is because I'm lazy. My big project right now is a 2D game engine written in VB. It's barely started and it already supports a lot of Directx 8's graphical features, and if I ever finish it, it will have a full scripting language for level design as well a very functional console. I know VB isn't exactly the best for this, but It's what I'm best at.

How'd you figure out how to use DirectDraw? I just don't get that graphics stuff. I can't figure out a lot of that game stuff.

I do have a decent idea of how to write scripting languages (after I did that interpreter assignment in school) but they're a real pain too.

I use Visual Basic to make lots of stuff too. That language is just fun to use. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I don't use DirectDraw, I think it's a pain in the ass. After Directx 8, the DirectDraw and Direct3d were unified into a single api, but almost all of the directdraw stuff went out the window. I use polygons and textures with alpha channels for my engine. It looks nice and runs fast. 3d stuff kinda blows my mind, though. If I can ever figure out how to implement orthoganl projection matrices, I'll render my 2d stuff in 3d space and I'll be able to implement dynamic per pixel lighting and particle systems. It will be the best looking 2d game ever! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm4.gif Unfortunately I can't seem to get my brain around the math involved in getting the projection to work. MAybe someday.... If you like I could send you my sourcecode sometime. Scripting languages are actually a little easier in vb because yo ucan use the CallByName which takes a string and calls the function or method that's named that. Very Useful! And to think I learned all this on my own! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

Damnit, I can't figure out graphics code worth a damn. I also can't figure out the math behind 3D stuff. It make no sense to me. I'd love to see the guts of that game though.

I just realized that VB doesn't have a function to find the last occurrance of a string within another string. Now I have to write one. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

That finds the first occurance of a string within another after a specified start index. I wanted one that finds the last so I wrote one using Instr and a loop.
