I mainly go by what sounds good to me, not the reputation of a band/composer, if the music is "popular" etc...

I also tend to like music without lyrics, I don't know why really, I just do.

I also think MTV sucks in the United States. When I was vacationing in Germany I though their MTV was much better due to the variety. Believe it or not they actually show music videos for techno over there. I've seen maybe 1 or 2 on US MTV and those are usually on at 3:00 am.

Aliotroph?, you have almost the exact same tastes in music as me!!! I mean, I'm very surprised that, besides me, someone else out there still enjoys music by Gustav Holst. I don't think I had ever cried while listening to a song befoer I was 7 or 8 years old and I listened to Neptune, The Mystic, for the first time.

Anyway, besides Holst, I like:

Philip Glass
Sergei Prokofiev
Beethoven and Mozart (a bit)

Everclear
Sugar Ray
Nirvana
REM
Billy Joel
SodA
Mick Rippon
Cake
They Might Be Giants

James Horner
John Williams
Phil Collins
Danny Elfman
James Newton Howard

And the authors of most of the video games I play http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif White Zombie, BP, Sonic Mayhem, etc. Andrew Barnabas/Paul Arnold/Pete Murphy (Frogger CD-ROM)
NIN excluded as of yet...

Oh, Cynic Guru is pretty cool too. He did that "Coz This is Doom, Baby" song a while back.

8. Lame (7 mins intro shit tho)

Lateralus

11. reflection

Heavy songs:

Aenema album

And Gary Numan is great, I'm a big fan from way back http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
'Cars' definitely wasn't stupid. It's brilliant. But brilliant music doesn't have to be complicated.
They could say more with less, which is what elevated it to art; it's called Minimalism.
That's what the music from bands like The Ramones and The Clash (and other Punk bands) and The Police, Kraftwerk and Gary Numan (and other New Wave bands) were all about.
A lot of 80's music was utter shite, don't even get me started, but it troubles me that the brilliance of some of this music of the 80's is greatly lost on the present generation.
The same could be said to a much greater extent, of the Beatles. Brilliant music, all of it. But more and more people don't see what they were all about, and how there wouldn't be the music they listen to today without the music that came before it; they just don't 'get it'.

I still have a lot of old 45's from the eighties (showing my age a bit) including some Gary Numan stuff (Cars, Are friends electric, I die you die, this wreckage,) Ultravox (Vienna), Visage (Fade to gray), most of the Pet shop boys stuff and most of the singles by Erasure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Mel and Kim and the Communards so Big Al will be even more worried when he comes round. I even have 'Dog eat Dog' and 'Antmusic' by Adam and the Ants. I also have a good few 'original' punk records.

I've got most of all of that you mentioned, still on vinyl, Mystic!
Ultravox was great with John Foxx, and later with Midge Ure.
I was a huge fan of the Bunnymen. Saw them at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA, circa Lips Like Sugar, before they broke up. You could tell they were on their way out, but it was still great.
I still need to find a decent turntable, and convert all my lp's to digital.....
I saw Jane's Addiction (also, the Chilli Peppers with Faith No More w/ original singer opening up) at a small club called the Uptown Lounge in Athens, GA, back in my band days...... I'm really dating myself now. You guys didn't know I was in a semi- famous Athens band, Seven Simons (actually two of them, as I joined Kilkenny Cats after them).
We toured up and down the East Coast with A Flock of Seagulls, and out West as far as New Mexico with The Fixx.... both of those undoubtedly two huge 80's bands http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
I've got some great memories of those tours ....!

My favorite band is Marilyn Manson. I also really like NIN (met Trent Reznor in real life, as well as Madonna Wayne Gacy from Manson) Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne etc. As far as music goes though, I totally DESPISE all the poser people. I won't get into any more than that because I've probably said more than anyone cares to hear.

I like a great deal of the bands people (especially you Doom Dude) have listed, but I think people failed to list some of the best ones. I can't believe (as far as I saw anyway) that no one listed Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd is one of THE greatest bands ever as far as I'm concerned. I tend to focus on Metal/Heavy Metal and I have a band of my own... *Promote* *Promote* ...but you cannot always look at what makes a band good by today's standards, you need to look at what made bands good in the past and mix that 'selectively' with what people like now. For example, one band I like, Slipknot has a lot of fucking energy on stage, but quite frankly their purpose, their lyrics, and their gimmic is all a front. They are a fad. They are a pretty good band, but they aren't really revolutionary like so many people think. I mean my god, fucking Metallica was doing drums that had like 40 beats per second. I'm not even going to go into Slayer or Cradle of Filth. Slipknot should be able to achieve more with 9 band members. I listen to the music and I like it, but what a waste.

NIN on the other hand, there is one of the most talented people in the music industry. Trent Reznor has single handedly made his own music (with occasional help but for the most part he is a one man band) and not only that, he was a major influence on one of the world's biggest bands today, Marilyn Manson. Some of this stuff just never stops amazing me. I guess I'll shut up now because I have work to do on my Doom wads and you people probably could really give a fuck what I think so talk to you later maybe. Thanks for your time.

Black (Black is also my band name, so if there is a huge band in the future called Black I am probably in it. I hope... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm31.gif )

I'll give you to the count of ten to get your yellow-bellied, sap-sucking, carcass off my door! One, two, ten!!! JK

Any who, Trent Reznor has made very good CDs. The Fragile is 23 songs. How does that fall into the "He couldn't pull an album together to save his life" category? Not to mention that he has one of the most accomplished stand alone record labels out there. Nothing is the record company that hosts Mr. Marilyn Manson's band! Trent Reznor single handedly picked them out and he has undoubtedly made a good choice. Although you probably disagree, you still have to respect Mr. Reznor for all his accomplishments. He is practically a 'one man band' and even if you don't like his music you could probably still agree with me that he has done quite a bit in the music industry.

I don't know if U2 'rules the world,' if anyone was going to rule the world as far as music goes I think U2 would be far from it. But that is just my opinion. : )

A tribute album done solely by KMFDM? I have practically every KMFDM CD and I've never heard of that. I also too, have practically every White Zombie CD and the only CD with any 'redone songs' by KMFDM to my knowledge is on that CD. Go to;

I think the radio sucks. But that's just me… If we are talking everything then hell… Including my regular actual CDs, EPs, LPs, Vinyl and singles for Marilyn Manson alone, I have 54 CDs. Not to mention that is just one band. Heh…

Hey Lut, I think we are a lot alike, tell me about your band. We may have music differences but oh well. I could care less, I tend to be open minded.

Talk to you later hopefully,
