View Full Version : DooM Community Dying?!
REoL
July 19th, 2000, 11:45 PM
Let me answer this right now: HELL NO! Was it? Yes, but then came the news of "DooM III", whatever it's name will be.
I have to agree with Zack in some ways, as he wishes good ridance to the community, as most of (key word is MOST) the ACTIVE community you see are @$$h01e$. In fact, all of them frequent #doomroom a lot. Then again, some active members are NOT idiots, and a VAST MAJORITY of the community are great people, and want nothing to do with the active people. Too ashamed, I guess. Oh well, that's what this "newdoom.com" thingie is for, the REST of us! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
DooM ain't dying quickly. It's an easy game to edit and gives a unique mood and feel today's games just can't deliver, no matter what the new engines can do or look like.
I know, because I've been in and out of the community for 6 years now (as well as REoL TOUGH), and I see no signs of the community going anywhere anytime soon.
What will "DooM III" hold for us? Probably something good, but not likely the shock value of the original. That will never be duplicated ever again.

I dunno how they can say that the Doom community is dieing , especially after the fact that "id" software is making anouther Doom game . They way they said it , was like all the old school doomers were crawling into the pine box on their way to the grave , to make way for the new doomers . Like we were croaking by the dozens every second . HELLO , i am still here and i ain't movin aside for nobody ! I played Doom then , i play Doom now and i will play Doom tomorrow !

George. I agree with many of the points in your post. Most members of the Doom community are decent. I think I should educate you on the kind of people you describe as "active" though. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the guys that frequent #doomroom are anything but active contributing members. (Afterglow and Teppic are two major exceptions) You have guys like _Tom (spit) and "i don't do doom" aurikan (spit, spit) running the place. These two are agents of chaos with nothing more than fleeting ties to Doom and the people that care about it. These are the kind of people that you and Zack are probably talking about. They are militant troublemakers and they feel they have no responsibilty whatsoever to the Doom community. Aurikan went so far as to proclaim this publicly on his webpage.
The current divide and most of the senseless flaming that went on on the DW forums can be traced directly to the activities of those two jerks. It really makes me sick when I hear that people hate the community because they don't understand this. I could give a list right now of about 60 or 70 really good people who are the true "active" members of the Doom Community. These people are not jerks. They don't flame people. They are freindly and helpful. All around great people to know. Newdoom.com IS part of the community. The sites it hosts is proof positive of that. It is not a place apart "for the rest of us." In fact, it's just that kind of attitude that causes the kind of division we all seem to hate.

Stphrz,
I agree with all your specifics there. I think you missed what I meant by "active", as in, anybody who is in the community that doesn't just come in, look, and get out. They post of visit related rooms. Maybe that wasn't pointed out too well....
Then again, there's other people in the community that are just plain mean-spirited and are cowards, who are scared of very popular groups/people who create stuff. I didn't know how many big level editors I talked to out there that tell me they get picked on, get death threats, and are basically treated like garbage.
Of course, there's the other 90% that are great people. Can't forget that.

Whatever, I don't really care as long as someone from the other parts of this "Doom community," (considering New Doom as part of it) start annoying people and ruining the fun for NEWDOOM.com here.

I love 1/2life, Counterstrike is the best, Quake(s) have Awesome DM, Sys Shock/Deus Ex are immersive and highly addictive single player campaigns...
Yet DooM has seen them all through, is the only one whose directory has never disappeared even for a day.
It is a natural constant of the gaming world.
Dave speaks sooth: 'DooM SHALL never die - only the players'.

I wanna be buried with a rocket launcher! That's how the Doom Guy said he wanted to be buried at the end of Final Doom. Very awesome conclusion. If you go to hell when you die, you'll need some cleaning up to do!!

In 2100, people will be firing up their hologram PC monitors and play Unreal 37 with all it's 100% realistic AI and archetecture, but people will still fire up good ol' "2D" games of DooM.
Nothing matches the atmosphere and ease of editing like DooM has. Everyone tries to recreate it, but that just won't happen, and I bet that includes "DooM III" as well.

I do believe REoL is right. In the future when games like Half-Life 33 and Battlezone 52 come out, Doom will be sitting there along side them, on the hard drives(future drives will be called hoverdrives) of the future.

Is any of this new shit actually better than the old shit? As long as old topics aren't flooding and moving the new ones to anouther page then I don't see what the problem is. LOL@hoverdrives!!!
Well, the DooM community certainly isn't dying anytime soon. What's funny is that when Half-Life 33 or whatever comes out there will probably still be sorce-ports for DooM and even though they will technically be ports, they will likely have graphics that look like real life and very messy code as a result.

I'll answer this if you don't mind...
avatar
1. <chat, virtual reality> An image representing a user in a multi-user virtual reality (or VR-like, in the case of Palace) space.
2. (CMU, Tektronix) root, superuser. There are quite a few Unix computers on which the name of the superuser account is "avatar" rather than "root". This quirk was originated by a CMU hacker who disliked the term "superuser", and was propagated through an ex-CMU hacker at Tektronix.
(stolen from an online dictionary)
also, it was originally Hindu for the incarnation of a god as a mortal; used in the Ultima series a lot.

I thought avatar meant God.
Hmmmmmm here is the dictionary explanation:
av·a·tar Pronunciation Key (v-tär)
n.
The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form.
An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.
A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar.

I think it's ultima that made the term popular, the series is one of the most successful ever. You play the Avatar who is the incarnation of a god as a human, in Ultima 9 you ascend back up again having defeated the guardian
