remember that early 80's movie with the people trapped in the video game? I don't; I've never seen it, but I found some kewl tron games based on the light cycles.

Way back in my earlier days of school, I used to be the so called "TRON master" of this cute lil TRON game based on the movie. No one knew it was based on the movie but it was great fun on the network of mac classics. We had tournaments and stuff, it was fun.

The TRON arcade game itself was a big hit, and since the 20th anniversary DVD and soundtrack cd have just come out, I thought of the old tron games I used to play.
Anyway, just to see, I did a search for
"TRON game" and you would not BELIEVE what I found!

Here's some tron games:

Armagedtron (http://pluto.spaceports.com/~zman/armagetron/download_windows.html)
This tron game features full 3d, net support, and movie-true sound fx as well as the best control of the games I found. The AI gets better each round.

GLTron (http://www.gltron.org/)
This tron game features full 3d open GL, a cool IT sountrack and a pretty groovy font as well as split screen mode. Poor control though but the AI is decent.

Startron (http://www.startron.org/)
This one is less like the movie but features new things such as power-ups. It uses Open GL and has network support. It also has numberous ships with customizable colors.

lightcycles3d (http://home.nycap.rr.com/lcycles/index.html)
The download is currently DOWN but it looked cool. Fully 3d like the others.

Discs of Troff (http://www.discsoftroff.com/)
I haven't played it as it doesn't look like a lightcycle game but it is based on tron. Full 3d, note the "all your base" inset.

Shockwave Flash Tron game (http://www.simtek.dircon.co.uk/beta/tron.html)
I don't know the password so I can't play but I tried 2 player, its pretty cool and 3d.

Utron (http://www.planetunreal.com/utron/)
A currently unfinished TRON mod for Unreal tournament

Tron for palm pilots (http://perso.worldonline.fr/matrice/PocketPC/palmtops.htm)
I don't have a palm pilot but this looks kewl. Site is in french, have fun xdoom!

Unfortunately, I didn't find the 2d tron network-style game I was looking for but these are damn kewl.

Just to set the story straight, The Game TRON was around before the movie, about 2 years before in the Arcades, The Movie was based on the game, not the other way around. Other than that, the Movie was a BOMB! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm8.gif

Hey, cool searchings pickle!!

This guy Dan Shuman coded a very amateur version of that game 5 or 6 years ago at ACE computer camp (aka "geek heaven") in the QBASIC programming language. I added a bunch of features to it and so did this older kid who called himself "Hobo Entertainment." He also made a fun FDOS (Fake DOS) program that fooled me. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif Ah, memories. Anyway, together we made this TRON game better...it still looked crappy, especially since this was in like '95 and in QB. I still have a copy of an early version of the game that I don't think I touched, but these days it'll run either too fast or not at all.

I do believe, according to a book I have taken out on the history of video games, that the movie and the game came out roughly at the same time. Commercials of the movie contained small adverts for the arcade game and vise versa. TRON the movie came out in '82, lemme check the rom of the arcade game.........
.............
...........
hmmm the rom didn't have the year, but the MAME BIO says it was made with early scripts of the movie, therefore it was based on the movie. The official game sucked, only the lightcycle part was fun and the AI was awful.

It is possable I guess, But, back then I do remember playing the game TRON long before I went to the premire of the movie. It is possable that they released the game first as an ad ploy.....

Maybe you hung out in the Arcade a little bit too often and didn't see the commercial until later on. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Bally Manufacturing, the nation's largest maker of video arcade games, is creating a "TRON" video game.
The game will be in Bally's 240 Aladdin's Castle arcades across the United States and in theaters exhibiting
"TRON" prior to the film's release. The "TRON" arcade game will debut in a national tournament, the finals
to be held in New York City the week before the movie opens.</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>
