Did everyone take the doom quiz?
I only got 19. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/frown.gif
One away from being the best.
I suppose Zack will get 30 or something.

Before Doom_Dude says anything to make me feel below God, let me just say I WOULD have taken this quiz yesterday and posted here first! But I was busy looking up the TV listings for the Rocky & Bullwinkle show...
http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Okay, I gotta 22, went back and changed my answers to the questions that made absolutely no sense, and got a 25.
This Doom Quiz TRUELY blew hard. I'm sorry, but it's true. Whoever wrote it barely knew the answers himself, let alone what the hell he was talking about. WHAT THE F*CK IS A VOODOO DOLL in Doom!!!!!
Ghosts are not ghosts, morons! They're spectres, invisible demons!!!
And the less I mention Memento Mori, the better.
The scoring quiz only went up to 20 for some reason, when there were 30 questions, and so even if you got a 20 out of 30, a 67% and flunked the damn thing, you'd have gotten the top score! NOT a good challenge.
And on NEWDOOM.com's behalf, I followed that link and it took me directly to the scoring page, in which I initially had a zero.
Now this is putting the Rants & Raves section to good use!

Hey i only got a 17 on that thing ! I think that some dude from anouther planet must of wrote that test . Where did they , come up with some of those weird questions ?
I think one of those alien crickets wrote that test ! Damn crickets !
Yeah , Zack , why did mister Doom tester call the Spectres , ghosts ? It's a wonder they didn't call Cyberdemons , Tall Angry Monsters and Cacodemons , Red Globes . Sheeeeeeeesh !
Why didn't they ask cooler stuff like : What does UAC stand for .
1) United Aerospace Corporation .
2) Universal Aeronautical Corporation .
3) Union Aerospace Corporation .
I know the answer . Do you ?

Yeah a Cyberdemon ! Ummmmmmm , i sure know that United sounds better . Say do you think that maybe the dude who typed up The Ultimate Doom Manual , used the wrong name ? I am looking at it now and on page 1 , near the bottom of paragraph 1 it says Union .
Does this mean that if the answer is United i have to send you the Million ?

Zack

It is likely that the manual was typed up by Carmack, but it could have been anybody.
Carmack, and probably all of id, don't really care about their story, or the inside details of their games and things like that.
In fact, they noted to the public, in an interview, that they just wanted Ultimate Doom to get done and out of the way. That was why the Spider Mastermind was the boss and no new monster. (Why should they spend time on something they won't make money for...)
Also, when I once explained to Carmack that we all had the pronunciation of Cacodemon wrong (It's really kay-sho), he replied by explaining, Whatever! Pronounce it whatever you want, it doesn't matter.
Unofficial things like that just don't cut it for us Doom freaks. It's like any Star Wars or Xena fan. We're all nerds, and EVERYTHING is official. There's minor details, inside scoops and everything! Apparently, Carmack doesn't understand that what is the tiniest, boring detail to him and id, is huge, important and relevant to us!
The point is, that's why it says Union Aerospace Corporation in your Doom manual. To id, it just doesn't matter, it's UAC anyway! Still, it was originally United, and I don't think anybody else in the Doom community says Union anyway...
And unless you WANT to give me a million dollars, you don't have to :)
--Zack
Doom_Dude
July 3rd, 2000, 06:29 PM
Yeah , Union , sounds too much like Onion . Sucky .
The Million dollars of monopoly money is here if you want it . It weighs about 200 lb's . If you don't mind paying the shipping and handling costs , then it's yours .
Ummmmm , you would think that once they named a monster kayshodemon , then the thing would be called a kayshodemon . I guess it's like you say , Carmack and company , don't really care how we all pronounce it . As long as we fork over the coin for the stuff they make , then they be happy and we all end up being happy too ( at least some of us ) .
Any more cool trivial , Zack The Doom Trivia Guru ?

According to the Book of id, Kevin Cloud is (was?) the one designing most/all id's manuals. So you can blame him for the Union typo :)
Okay:
What happened just before Kevin Cloud signed a lease for six months at an apartment, to stay and work with id in Madison, Wisconsin?
1) id abandoned him and moved to Mesquite!
2) id called him and told him he's fired!
3) Jay was mugged, lost his baggage from the trip over!
4) id called him and told him not to sign anything!
*hint* This might have been a toughie, found only in the Book of id, if Cloud hadn't mentioned it again in a recent interview :/ *hint*

BAH you people have not played doom enough http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
the Voodoo Doll occurs when you place more than one co-op starting point for a player (i.e. 2 player1 or player2 etc starting points in a map)
you spawn at one of them... but if you go to the other one you can see yourself! and this voodoo doll of yourself moves around just like you!... and if you shoot it.. you loose health!!
ive seen this implemented in one map which was really cool. It was kinda like CTF with voodoo dolls http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
you each had a voodoo doll of your own at your base. and you had too go out and kill the other peoples voodoo dolls... or you could try and defend your own doll...
It was fun for a while anyhow http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
But where is this doom quiz? I cant find the link..
King_Ralph
July 4th, 2000, 08:55 AM
What the hell did you just say to us?

WHO SAID YOU COULD SPEAK IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

But we are doom freaks and we still play doom right to this very day and we still love it. Well I'm still playing it anyway.
Doom_Dude
July 4th, 2000, 03:14 PM
Actually , i never stopped Dooming . If that is a VooDoo doll , then i know what your talking about . When i first started editing , i accidently put two player one starts in my level . When i booted up the map , i saw this dude standing there so i blasted him . I ended up taking damage , because i was just shooting myself . The weird thing was i couldn't move , so i never thought anymore about it . Sounds more like a editing f**k up that some dude acidently discovered and decided to use in a map . I still think it's stupid .
Besides i don't play co~op stuff . Sorta lame .
I choose answer # 1 Zack . Am i right ?

The only good Vile is a dead Vile .
Zack
July 4th, 2000, 05:36 PM
No, Doom_Dude, 1 is wrong :) I keep the million, thank you!
And Finite is wrong, too. I've played around with multiple player spawn spots before, and they don't move around like I do. They simply stand there. You can telefrag them, which causes an instantaneous death on you. That trick was used in Evilution MAP30, right near the beginning. A maze of blocks standing in slime, and you had to cross them a certain path, or else you would cross a trigger that would make you telefrag yourself! I figure that in co-op, anyone who moved the wrong place would telefrag himself and the other players as well.
I never heard that being called a Voodoo doll.
I'm not a Doom editing freak! I like Doom the way it originally was, without porting sh*t and crap like that! Every new level that was not marked by id is stupid. I don't care to learn to edit or any of the editing terms used out there. I like vanilla Doom for what it is, and I don't try to improve it. I don't know about all you guys, but I'm a true DOOMER! Not a damned Doom editor!
Peace,

Doom_Dude
July 5th, 2000, 05:18 AM
Zack , all my Doom 2 levels that i have made are Vanilla flavor . I wanted to keep to the original id plan . No new textures , sounds or other junk . I find that a lot of the added music and stuff just doesn't make the id software grade . I wanted to create what i thought would be a cool expansion to the original Doom 2 . Editing ain't crap . Not all people make maps just to get thier piece of " hey look at me ! I'm a mapper like the id guys " ! Some of us editing dudes won't release anything unless we feel that what we have made is top quality . Some of us are very picky and extremely particular about the stuff that we make . If i make somethin' that sucks , i'd rather delete it then corrupt the Doom community with garbage . Unfortunately not all editing dudes feel this way .
Yeah , it stays there and is actually a editing error . It is not supposed to exist . It is'nt somethin' id implemented . Never ever heard this thing being called a VooDoo doll before . Sorta stupid .
Zack , i know about circle strafin' barons and how to edit Doom and stuff , but these human relations questions make me scratch my head . So don't get mad if i can't figure this one out . I wildly guess # 4 . Yeah , yeah , i got it wrong again .
I vow to never use VooDoo Dolls !

i got a score of 21
what the hell was with those questions??
The voodoo doll thing was stupid... although I appear to be the only person here who has even HEARD of the stupid things.. I have NEVER had one crushed and therefore cannot answer that STUPID question!!
As for that memento whatever thing... what the hell??? Never heard of it...
"If an Archvile resurrects a monster killed by a crushing ceiling,
that monster becomes a ghost and cannot be hurt by any means."
I have seen this done.. and they CAN be killed! The monster becomes non-clipping... and can ONLY be killed by a rocket blast to the wall next to them. Now this was a true or false question. I answered false because they CAN be killed! Was this correct? BLOODY AMBIGUITY!!
Anyways... give us a REAL DooM quiz next time.. that one was STUPID.

Ironically, I HAVE experienced crushing my voodoo doll and know for a fact that it kills you as well. Distant memories from when I was fooling around with a shareware map editor.
Yeah i remember seeing the ghost monsters in the Requiem megawad. That was kewl :) Didn't know the bug was that simple though...kinda dissapointing towards the engine. I think they can also be killed by an exploding barrel as well as a rocket blast, too, right?

Okay, I've retrieved all the correct answers to that appalling Doom quiz. Here they are in compact convenience:
BBADCCDDAACBCCATTTFFFTFTTFTFTT
And an elaboration on the unfair toughies:
#5. The imp doesn't take five shots to kill, even though that was the correct answer. They actually take an average of 6 shots. (60 HP and each pistol shot takes 10 HP)
#12. I've heard of the Depths of Doom Trilogy, but had no purpose of purchasing it because I already bought the id Anthology. Plus, anybody old-school Doom fan who bought each Doom game as it came out wouldn't buy it either, and wouldn't probably know that Master Levels of Doom was the third item included in the package.
#14. Indeed the yellow key is used in TNT MAP31! It was resting atop an invisible barrier where the cyberdemon was waltzing around, and I got access to it shortly after. I needed not cheat or use any patch! (This version was included in the id Anthology, so I assume it WAS a patched version from the actual Final Doom package.)
A. After a bit of searching (okay okay, it wasn't that hard, thanks to the wonderful world of excite.com) I have unsolved the mystery of Memento Mori. Memento Mori and its sequel, Memento Mori 2, are both megawad addons to Doom2 made by the Innocent Crew in 1996. These are also the makers of the Requiem addon. Their website is http://www.tic.de/ and you can read about and download MM at http://www.tic.de/mm/mmmenu.html and http://www.tic.de/mm2/mm2menu.html
Case closed!
B. A cyberdemon invulnerable to his rockets!? I think not! Hah! This is a total mistake. It make not seem like he hurts himself, but in close range, every once in a while, you can and will notice him cry out in pain after hitting you or a near wall or monster by accident.
D. See A. You know, these were fan-made addons and were official to Doom in absolutely NO WAY. What the hell were the morons designing this damn quiz thinking? These are 4-year-old levels made in four months by some dudes THREE years after Doom...Why the hell is it in a quiz based on the actual GAME!?!?!?
L. I distinctly remember dying after my voodoo was crushed, that one time long ago. Apparently, either I was wrong, or this so-called Doom quiz is. But it's not like anybody would know the answer right off the top of his head!
M. What in the name of God is the Tuttifrutti effect!?!? Do you know this one, Finite??
Doomed to be of service,

Nope... never heard of this damn tuttifrutti effect... I assume it would be some palette screwup where you get lots of bright colours in the screen.. but I have NEVER heard anything about it...
I. From my memory it was 60/(number of tics+1)... as 60 was the max fps you could get in doom.. not 70!!! so that question is WRONG... (well i think it is http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif)

J. Earlier Doom versions can be set up so that you can use three monitors for a single players, and instantly see what's on your left and right.
Supposed answer: False
THAT IS WRONG!!!
You could do that!! I remember reading up on it intensely... (although i never had 3 monitors.. it was still possible!!)

J. was marked True :)
They didn't screw up there.
I read that up once, too. It was in the Doom v6.666 FAQ I believe. Ahh, my favorite part of that FAQ was the poem, The Night Before Doom!
But anyway that wasn't a flaw in the quiz.
Oh and one other thing. Doom's standard speed is supposed to be 35fps, so I would agree with 70 and not 60, as 70 is a multiple of 35.

Titti-Fruiti is FUN, especially with slow computers. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
This effect is the effect that results when you used a non-standard sized graphic on the walls. Anything not fitting 64 units increments in HEIGHT resulted in off-centered duplicates with quasi-random bright colors in between the screwed up duplicates.
On 2-sided walls the same applies, or if a wall texture with more than 1 "patch" is used will create total quasi-random chaos (as well as any transparent color used on a 1-sided wall), when close, the frame rates dropped SEVERELY, causing the dreaded "Medusa Effect." Anyone with a 486 would tell you how bad that can be. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

You never saw the Tuti Fruiti effect? Wow. I guess us old-school designers are the "only" ones who seen it.
If I remember tonight, I'll capture a shot for you, and as for slowdown, a P2/450 won't be able to show the Medusa Effect whatsoever.

Well King Reol , i know what your talking about . Sometimes when you apply a texture like "step 16" that has a size of 32/16 onto a step that is 24 units high ( or higher ) , you see a bunch of crapola . This mess looks like a bunch of random colored pixels ( very ugly ) . It is somethin' that is seen while editing and if this is tutti-frutti , then cool . But why is it in a Doom quiz ? The majority of people who have seen this thing are editors , so the question belongs in a Doom Editing quiz , i think .
Then again , some players may have seen this tutti-frutti thing while playin' some user created map(s) . For some reason , some mappers don't give a s**t and leave crap like this in their maps . Sheeesh , i hate that .
Anyways i never heard this thing called tutti-frutti before . I always called it " the ugly f***in wall mess" or somethin . Thanks for clearing up the mystery .

Okay I'm sure you guys are dying to know the answers to the quiz i posted (yeah right) =P
1) B. The Cacodemon first appeared in E2M1.
2) D. There are 4 arch viles in MAP28.
3) C. The Icon of Sin magically screams the bloated words, "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero," in reverse.
4) E. Haha tricked you, the answer was none of the above!! The cyberdemon appears once in E2, once in E3, and at least three or four times in E4.
5) C. Wolf3D E1M1 is Doom2 MAP31, and the secret exit, which would normally lead to E1M10, leads instead to what was originally Wolfenstein's E1M9, on MAP32. The bonus answer was D: E6M9 was the music for MAP32, and SOD-21 became the usic for MAP31 and also the Doom II credits theme. The name for E6M9 is called The Ultimate Challenge or The Ultimate Conquest. The name for SOD-21 is aptly titled Evil Incarnate. (NOW I remember I heard that name before! Evil Unleashed was the original Doom name.) Also, go to http://www.doomworld.com/music to find info on all of Bobby Prince's Doom music, the titles for each peice, comments on some, and downloads in midi and mp3 (recorded with SB Live, sounds GREAT)!
6) False. The sun is not visible in Knee Deep of the Dead because of the hazy, cloudy sky and mountains everywhere.
7) True. The bunny's severed head appears at the end of Doom I, and again in the Doom guy's pocket after Ultimate Doom. Romero's severed head appears hidden behind the Icon of Sin at the end of Doom II, Evilution, and the Plutonia Experiment. So severed heads always appear at the end of these Doom games!
8) True. Look around in parts of Doom 2, and E2 The Shores Of Hell, maybe other spots as well, and hearts resting on columns will appear to still pump vigorously.
9) True. In addition to the secret on the left wall of MAP31, containing medkits, a plasma gun and lots of cells, five were added that were not in Wolfenstein 3D. They were the one opposite the original, containing an invulnerability behind the wall, and the four pillars in the room, which can be opened to reveal a BFG, super shotguns, chainguns, and a megasphere.
10) True. Quake was first announced by id in Commander Keen in the documents within the game. It was planned to originally be a side scroller. Sounds creepy...imagine filling the screen with Chthon and the Quake guy running all around him!
11-20) I admit, the matching is really tough. I really hope there are at least one or two people besides me in this world who knew these names by heart somewhere! I'm doubting that even id would remember this stuff :)
11) Spawning Vats -- E) E2M7
12) Hangar -- J) E1M1
13) Dis -- H) E3M8
14) Deimos Anomaly -- F) E2M1
15) Phobos Anomaly -- B) E1M8
16) Warrens -- I) E3M9
17) Nuclear Plant -- G) E1M2
18) Refinery -- D) E2M3
19) Toxin Refinery -- A) E1M3
20) Hell Keep -- C) E3M1

I'm too lazy to write another quiz just for Doom II, so if anyone wants to do the honors :)

Oops!! I'm so sowwy...I play on Ultra Violence so often I forgot to mention that that's what I meant, hehe.
That question was unfair, so that's a free point. Finite, you got a 7, and Doom_Dude, you got a 12, k?
King_Ralph, why don't you still take the test? You can then simply grade yourself and tell us how you did...

How exactly does that make us nitwits? So I wasn't part of the Doom community in 1996, big fraggin' deal. Doesn't mean I suck at Doom. It just means I suck at the Doom community stuff. Personally, I'd be happier without DoomWorld and the EfNet doom channels, which are in a way the center of the Doom community (NEWDOOM.com & DoomServ are suburbs), because all you guys down there care about is fan-made stuff for Doom, Doom editing and Doom ports. Like I said once before, I'm a vanilla-Doom guy. The only good levels are the official Doom levels. That, and Hoover Dam and Slugfest.
You don't have to be a part of the Doom Community, to even care about some megawad from 1996, to be a Doomer! A true Doom fan cares about Doom, and not addons by Doom fans!
Tell me, saria, where were you on the night of December 10, 1993? You weren't a Doomer then, were ya! You didn't even know about Doom, yet indeed, on that date, the Doom community was beggining, by friends and fans of id. Don't you wish you had been there, that exciting, lost second Knee-Deep had been uploaded?
I rest my case.
Oh and by the way, the cyberdemon can indeed be hurt by his own rocket's jet propultion (Oh I forget what you Doom "urbanites" call it), just like the Arch Vile can be hurt if he stands too close to you when casting you in flames.

Oh gee I'm sorry I wasn't in the online DooM community in 1996... I played DooM since its first release and played on BBS's and the like, aswell as 1v1 over modem. I didn't have internet because I couldn't afford it, but got plenty of Doom related stuff off BBS's... Heaps of WADs but never heard of that one. I don't think playing other people's wads makes you a better doomer either.
As for the tuttifrutti effect, we have already been informed of this. Read the rest of the posts before calling us nitwits.
Just because he can hurt himself doesn't mean he should turn on other CyberDemons... what reasoning do you put behind this? What monster can hurt itself and also turns on its own kind??
Think twice before posting.

hia all. And to endear you people to me quickly, i have posted annoying answers/corrections to your stuff:
CORRECTIONS:
Sorry fellas - but the ORIGINAL DooM SW and retail version 0.9 & 1.1 manuals state quite clearly - in addition to the DooMII v1.666 manual that the UAC was most definetly the UNION Areospace Corporation. Makes sense for a corporate name - and i guess they had to many 'United's in the story so far.
Oh and cyberdemon rockets don't hurt cyberdemons - the monsters damage is class based, with only pellet weapons able to injure monsters of the same class (except melee damage in some rare occurences) - imps cant damage imps, including themselves, and a pack of cybie's can't do sweet FA to eachother.

Hey Daemomlaud , thats what i said , that my Ultimate Doom Manual says Union .
But everyone says its United .
Then i seem to remember it being called United .
Yet i do remember calling it U---ack , like in an abbreviation .

Who CARES what the fuck it stands for?? As long as it's UAC, I don't give a shit anymore...
As for the cyberdemons, I already knew that they can't hurt each other, but what I meant was that a cyberdemon can hurt HIMSELF if his own rocket explodes too close to him.
