Before everyone started using the mouse, which key(s) did you use to strafe? Lots of people use 'Alt', but I preferred Comma (left) and Period (right)

People use a mouse? WTF!
I always use Alt.

Ive never used the mouse in Doom, funny enough I never strafe, I just zig-zag really fast and run right up close to you and blow you away with my super shotgun. Thats the classy way to off someone in deathmatch. (or sneak up behind them and blow their head off)

Who the Hell uses a mouse to strafe? I use a mouse to turn, arrows for motion and left/right arrows for strafing (very fast).
I used to do Mystic's zig-zag trick, but strafing is easier.

I use the Left ALT key to strafe in Doom.
Although I use the mouse and WASD keys in other games (Quake, Half Life, Unreal, etc).
With auto vertical aiming in Doom it doesn't give an advantage to use the mouse.

Who uses auto-aiming?

Ok, I guess I could have worded that better. I meant that people who use mouselook usually use the left and right arrow to strafe.
So I'm the only one who uses comma and period then? It has the advantage of being able to run around an opponent while still facing them (you can use the arrow keys to turn at the same time as strafing).

If I were to ever use the mouse in Doom I would go with my standard Quake, Half Life setting.
W - Forward
S - Back
A - Alt Left
D - Alt Right
Forgot about the circle straffing thing. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm12.gif

I'm not sure I could handle the extra keys DooMAD. Maybe on a laptop I could. I like playing these games better on those keyboards because all the keys are close together.

How about Alt strafing and bringing out the automap at the same time (Alt+Tab). I used to do that all the time.

Let me guess, you stopped when the Win32 version came out (actually you could disable that hotkey).

I use to use the Alt key when strafing in DooM, but ever since games like Half-Life and UT came out, I'm more accustomed to the WASD method like Big Al. I recently tried to use WASD in just plain old Doom95 and it didn't have the effect I wanted, so I went back to Alt. But I have since learned the wonders of Doom Legacy, so now it's back to WASD. I hope I didn't bore anyone with this reply, because I started to bore myself in the end... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm25.gif

I guess I'm the only one then. Try it just once and see what you think.

If I'm using a port with mouselook, no.

Does the Quake trick of firing rockets at players feet work in Doom ports?

For all the time I spent playing Doom I never used strafe. Recently when I started playing more modern FPS's I realized I was at a major disadvantage with the default control settings. My new custom configuration is a hybrid of the WASD
mouse
up- look up
down- look down
left- turn left
right- turn right
button1- fire
button2- alt. fire or jump depending on the game.
keyboard
E- run forward
D- run backwards
S- turn left
F- turn right
W- strafe left
R- strafe right
A- jump
Q- crouch
Tab- automap/feign death
It's very comfortable and easy to get in to due to how it uses the home row. I also like having the jump command used by my pinky (finger) rather than for direction. I can also easily circle strafe using the mouse to turn and the R/W key to strafe.
I was awkward getting used to but now its instinct.

I don't understand why you had to have turn left/right on your keyboard when you already have it set on your mouse... but hey, that's just odd to me I guess.

Im probably the only one who still uses the arrow keys then, I probably like them so much because I use them in driving games too (my main reason for having a PC). Apart from the arrows I only use CTRL, \,(jump in Legacy) space, and the numbers for weapons.

When i first got CSDoom, no one believed me that it was possible to circle strafe with only the keyboard.

I started off playing DooM with the old ALT key for strafe, but soon got into the comma/period for deathmatch. Circle strafing was crucial for SSG duels in DooM2 http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
But now I love the mouse, I've mastered the mouse-flick-snap-shot-SSG kill http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I still use the arrow keys. That's why I like laptops. The keys are so close together that I can use the arrows and still have plenty of keys around to use for all the other functions in new games.
Crap, Smirnof Ice hurting typing ability and I've only had one. I've had to do so many corrections to my typing along the way here. Hit like a brick much! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif
