View Full Version : Crossroads...

I have come to one of life junction points. I stand at a four-way crossroad, unsure of what to do.

The road to the left is marked with the word zdoom...

You see, I have been living a sheltered life. Until today I had never tried skulltag, and I never knew what I was missing. The recent addition of slopes to the zdoom engine further increase it's moichness.

The road behind me is marked Legacy...

I feel, as an engine, it is lacking. Editing with it is restrictive, corneas pop up in frames that you whipped from somethign else, the partial transparency does not work, no bots, the list goes on. I have also become seperated from the community, which I find sad. I hardly ever go into the forum anymore, and when I do I find that the place is roaching with people who I don't know. No disrespect to Hurdler, who I respect as a coder and as a friend, but it is time for me to move on.

The road dead ahead is marked edge. I have heard many good things about this engine too, about it's near limitless possiblilties.

The road on the right is marked Outtahere, the road that zack walked a few weeks ago...

I dunno what to do. I have a million ideas, but do not have the talent to implement them.

I guess what I am saying is...

SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT THE **** TO DO???!!!??? http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Compose a poem?

Well Legacy has 3D floors, and ZDoom doesn't!
There are some good 3d floors that are coming...

I don't post here often. I only find myself posting like once or twice a day.

EDGE rocks, but DAMN if those sloped floors don't have me drooling!

If you hate coding/acs scripting definitely go to EDGE. The DDF files alone make EDGE the easiest engine to use. It's already got 3D floors (I already have 17 extra floors in on building with barely any lag on my 233mmx). Plus you can make your own line types, sector types, add sounds quick and easy and no more dehacked!

But DAMN those sloped floors are sweet! That's okay. soon enough they'll be in EDGE too.

edge does sound vey appealling...

It has a certain sexyness, being on the frontier of doom editing, and for what I have in mind it may be the engine to go for.

This Edge jobby sounds cool. Right now I'm trying not to think of slopes. The map I'm making right now looks cool, but slopes! Ahhhhhh, will Legacy ever have slopes?

Hurdler says it is unlikely because it interferes with the current rendering engine

Personally, I'm at the same crossroads...

...but my choice is to use ZDOOM, but keep Legacy just incase, since it was my first port. I love Legacy so much, but it is as you said "lacking".

Can anyone tell me more about edge and just how far you can go with it without haveing to program C++?

What do you want to know? What did you want to do? First off, EDGE has the BEST information of any port out there. They have these HTML files you put on you harddrive and every possible command /parameter /possibility is in there. It's so great!

So what did you want to do?

TRAITORS! I mean, I can understand your decision, but I can't edit crap, so Legacy is the port for me http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm27.gif

Rellik, sorry to burst your bubble, but ZDoom also has pretty comprehensive downloadable HTML documentation, although admittedly it hasn't been updated in over a year...

I am still gonna use legacy, it's by far the best port for playing vanillia/boom wads on...

But i am not going to be editing it.

It looks like I am going to be doing some more research... but for the sort of thing I am plannign on I will need a way to expand frame tables and such...

Why don't all the port writers amalgamate and make the "Greatest Port"?

I would pay money to see that one!

I want my Port!

They could call it "Babalon" http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Because a) everyone basically wants to "do their own thing", and b) there would be too much arguing about which port should be used as the base, what should be included and what shouldn't be include, the correct way to do certain things, etc, etc.

Just edit for vanilla DooM/II or for BooM. With BooM, almost any source port can play your work, and with the vanilla games, any port will.

Just down load all the ports (like me http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm4.gif ), then if what you're doing doesn't go with a certain port, then switch http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well if your looking to make new sprites EDGE is pretty easy and there is NO limit on the new frames, new code pointers, anything like that.

You can make new attacks, add any number of new sounds, pretty much anything you want. And it SUPER easy to do. You could litteraly teach a retarded Gorilla to edit EDGE.

Not that I'm biased or anything. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/tongue.gif But dammit I want slopes!

Really? I still kinda like dos. Especially batch files. Love batch files. Then again I'm pretty set in my old-school ways. I find a way that works and I don't even try new things (probably wny I'm still using the WADED dinosaur) http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/tongue.gif

DOS is King. As the old saying goes, and still applies:

Windows = DOS in a clown suit.

I still like the old-skool DOS, and it's programs, especially PKZIP/PKUNZIP. I tried WinZIP and I thought it sucked. I had no control over what it did, then again, the newer versions may be be not as sucky.
The Quake III compiler runs in DOS, too. Can't forget that. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif Total control over the output in DOS.

These bigg a$$ed companies always change stuff to the point where something that isn't broken gets fixed, because some pencil pusher thinks it'll be a good idea.

Pencil Pusher: "Hey, lets scrap DOS!"

Bill: "We can't, because Windows can't survive without DOS!"

Pencil Pusher: "So! It'll cut costs in coding the new Operating System!"

Bill: "Lets Kill DOS!"
