View Full Version : 3Dfx is dead!

Old news, I know. But I remember not long ago in the old Legacy forums I was flamed for not supporting 100% for 3Dfx. What happened? 2 years ago 3dfx was the king of graphics! Now it's folding their cards.

seems allot of the companies are running out money and are folding up. I think that it is just a sign that are going change very fast for worse in the next few years. I read the other post. Didn't some one buy them out?

Yeah, Nvidiots bought their core assets. 3dfx was recommended by the board that they dissolve the company.

People have said that ATI and nVIDIA has a very interesting year up in 2001. Thats when NV20 comes out, Radeon2 and Radeon2 MAXX. nVIDIA now has 3dfx and Gigapixel's technology, ATI has ArtX.
3Dlabs folded, S3 boughted up and disappeared, Matrox not into 3D performance, etc.

NV20 should have a 2x performance increase over Geforce2 GTS.

Radeon2 is said to have 2x performance over Radeon, when it should have been 200 MHz, but it is clocked at 183/166 MHZ, depending on configurations.

Both is at 300 MHz, and both containing the new 4 ns DDR RAM at 250 MHz, effective 500 MHz. This should be interesting.

I don't know of any further chips for nVIDIA, other than NV25 which is much later, but what is there to go against Radeon2 MAXX? Or probably the Radeon2 will be a bit slower than NV20, but MAXX faster than NV20?

The only thing I know, is that the prices are not going to be pretty.

But, the power! The POWER!

They'd probably only get 30FPS in DooM III, at best (staring at a blank wall). http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

3dfx is as dead as doom.

I think. As in, I still play doom, and the voodoo2 in my brother's computer is still the only recent graphics card to impress me EVER, the other being an apocalypse 3dx (pre 3dfx) which has some of the best drivers known to man- it can run halfife at juuuust about the right speed on a sub-standard computer.

The problem is, these cards will be as worthless as my Rage LT Pro when DooM III comes out.
It's fun to watch how the technology improves over time, and that you'll need your own nucular power plant just to power the thing up.

Yep. Great cards now, sucky as all hell later.

NOW I know why some PC's have an extra power outlet on the back! http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

If the card runs 3D graffics at a (not so bad) FPS then who cares? We don't need some high-tech mother-board frier in our computers if we're happy with what you got.

AND WE ARE HAPPY!

Game requirements on graffics aren't growing, just look. "3d accelerated card" not "Voodoo 5 5600". So until that changes, be happy http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

And most games support both 3Dfx and openGL so there's no problem there

Some people like to buy the biggest and the best so they can play later games without the framerates getting too unbearably slow after a couple years. Others always get bigger and better ones for each new game, so they can brag like total idiots that they get 500FPS, even though you can only see about 59 to 90, depending upon the rez you run the game on.
(However, the human eye can only detect 38FPS at the most, but somehow can tell higher framerates.)

I believe your opinion. I have a lowly card in my PC, but Q3:A for the most part, runs fine. I may get choppy performance in some detailed maps, but it runs, and I'm happy with it. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Heh. The P60 I used to have ran Quake much faster than Duke Nukem. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif It actually kept up with P90's in terms of framerates, without any OC-ing of any kind.
