Quite simply, a real nice group of guys we'll just call DW Bigots, came into the chat room with the sole intent of causing trouble. What I got out of my conversation with a few of the more vocal of the DW Bigots, was that NewDoom.com sucked. And the reason we sucked was: our hosted sites suck, our forums suck (because some guy they think is really uncool named REOL is allowed to post here), and because our contest sucked.
Basically, and this was actually said by one of them, they have already made up their minds about us from day one, and there's nothing we can do that would be considered right or okay, by any means - that is, unless we were to cease to exist, of course.
Then they generally snickered at everyone they considered friends of our site and bated them repeatedly by calling them novices (however, I'm proud not to have enough time to sit w/ my thumb up my arse all day in IRC, thank you).
So, our little chat room just turned from a neat little diversion that contained the same good vibes from these forums, into another stupid war zone due to these DW Bigot extremists. Who needs it? It's just not worth it to provide them with a vehicle to exert their silly, immature hate and abuse.
I don't understand that whole thing, nor do I want to.
But that's what happened.
No response necessary, it really wouldn't do any good anyway.

There's a LOT of great level designers there, here, and all over. We all get along, but the ones with the "REoL Hate" couldn't build a map if their lives depended upon it (check their reviews), and are jealous. Sorry, but that's just it, plus, being ultra-popular, and REoL TOUGH pulling the feats that it has, and literally being first to attempt things didn't sit well with them, but any other editor, who cares? We all get along, especially any high-quality designers!

God damn, I've been hardly wisiting DW, and visiting less often (love to see how low their collective IQ's can go, and it still surprisinly dips), maybe I won't visit much more.

1) I was in there. On several occasions.
Ask Face. I prolly spent a total of 3 hours in there on the first weekend, switching back and forth trying to get my contest level done. In fact that accounted for 80% of my computer time on the friday and saturday. Sorry I wasn't dedicated enough for you :P

2) It takes time for a chat room to build a loyal group of users. You also have to promote it. Use the news section, post threads in the forums to inform people of its existance, hold special chat events etc.
Just throwing a room up ain't enough. DW's chat room is bare all the time too. Why? No effort or enthusiasm on the part of Ling and co.

3)No way to please them? Don't try. Just KB the fools and move on.

4)I'm glad you intend to try again :)

Regarding chatrooms, IRC is the best way to go, because you don't limit people to any particular OS or stuff like that. There are two foolproof methods of controlling an IRC channel that are often overlooked:

1) so you can't ban people you don't want there. Do the opposite- moderate and voice those you _do_ want there.

2) (aka the communist route) use a modeless channel- that way people can make up their minds who they want to listen to.
