There has always been something bothering me about doom and I was wondering if you knew the answer or if anybody else does. Was it ever possible to get the chainsaw in the original doom? I remember seeing the weapon in the first episode on level 2 or 3 through a window high up but it was impossible to get to. Was there a way to get it or was it just a weapon they wanted to keep for doom 2?

The chainsaw was introduced in episode 1, level 2, even in the shareware.
Remember where the huge lift down is, from the room with a bit of green waste is? If you head left, toward some wall lights, instead of straight into the lift, you will ride a different one down to a small niche with a window and health, and a few monsters. If you look through the window, there's a huge room with a chainsaw sitting atop a pillar.
To get there, you have to enter the dark maze (woo, the best spot in Doom SW!), and work your way back to one side, with a couple imps, health, and a green armor vest. Shoot the wall behind the armor, and it will rise to reveal a long twisting stairway, and lead right to the open area with the chainsaw! To lower the pillar, just head to the other side of the room and hit the red button.
The chainsaw in E1M3 that you mentioned is easy to get. The door to that room is secret, because it opens when you cross specific triggers in the adjacent rooms. To get up to the chainsaw you simply enter the room, turn right and walk up the winding stairway, and you're on the ledge with the chainsaw! Also up there is a room STOCK FULL of treasure! Soul sphere, ammo, partial invisibilty. It's locked behind a yellow-key door. The yellow key is in another part of the level, and is easy to get (it's nearby, offscreen, in the screenshot featurd on the main NEWDOOM.com page, right now, as a matter of fact!) Behind the initial door to the left of the first room in the level, if you head straight a bit, is a stair down to a small room with a switch, that opens another room nearby. Head up he stairs and work your way through the monsters to the back, and get the key. (This is also the room that leads to two other secret areas: the soul sphere in the window, and a room with a rocket launcher, with slime passage that leads to a switch that raises a bridge in the first room, leading to the secret exit!)
Hope that's descriptive enough. If you want, i'll just record a demo :)

Thanks man! I'm not actually going to play it again and get the chainsaw, I just needed to know if it was possible to get that chainsaw through the window or getting it at any place in the original doom.
I guess you really are the walking doom bible.
That's meant to be a complement by the way. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nice question! The thing is, if he does come up with a number, how do we know if he's telling us the truth???

Oh well. Assuming you meant Ultra Violence or Nightmare, there are 1223 imps in Doom 2. The level with the largest number of imps is level 9, with 103 imps.
I have sources. Obviously I wouldn't know a question like that off the top of my head. The testament never said how many grains are in a pillar of salt, you know!

Okay, let's try this for size:
You turn on NOCLIP, and with ceartain DooM-based games, or with source ports, you walk off the map, and keep going, and going, and going. At ceartain points, walls and secotrs randomly pop up and move about in weird fashion as you watch the actual map shrink in the distance.
How many times does this happen in MAP01 with all versions and ports?

I don't understand the question. How many times does what happen? Do you mean how many times would you keep going and going as sectors pop up?
