In the back is the sudden drop of the hill I climbed, plus a busy intersection, an office building, a slight treeline above it, then the sky.
Those are hard to see, but they're there, even in the above pic.

These newspaper photographers snap anything and everything and move on to something else. They don't give a rats ass what the composition is or any of that stuff.

Scanned newsprint always looks like crapola.

Yep. I was just approaching the top of the hill, then the photographer whipped out his camera and hit the shutter, barely checking for anything to be in frame or what have not.
