Best game of all time is a matter of opinion. That was just PC Gamer's opinion.

well of corse it will i mean haflfle was already beaten by ut 2003 i think and already on some fourums people are saying that the engine is bad and stuff it can't even compete with doom 3 it's not even it it's legue i don't mean to sound rude but what kind of a question was that i mean haflfle compared to d3 is nothing NOTHING I SAY! i man UT 2003 may be a more formetable apponant don't you aggree. But still halflife is still a fun game and always will be i'm still wondering about the gman what the hell is he up to, and what happenes to gorden at the end and what is this so called "job" the gman offers gorden and who are the gman's employers. I have a theory that the gman is an agent form xen because at the end of opposing force the gman said to adrian: the HUMAN reaction to tell everyone: or something along those lines but it had the human part now tell me doesn't htat sound just a bit weird why would he say "human" if he wan't an alian. And if that made no sence to you at all he said to gorden: no regrets mr,freeman and he sent hem over to xen. I hope they make a halflife 2 i think they were talking about it at one point. Also they are makeing a single player counter strike so that'll be cool. Also the mods for halflife are very good i.e: Heart of Evil, poke 646 (their makeing a sequel), and chemichal exsistance.

I would have to say yes, I think it will beat HalfLife. People have been waiting for somthing like this for a long time, and with the new engine design, this will be a game that you can pop in at anytime even after beating it and still get shivers up your spine everytime you play it. I mean I still pop play RTCW from time to time and every time I play it I still get amazed!!

All these "best of" titles are ridiculous. Every other gaming site/magazine declares their "B3ST gAm EvaR!" and morons read this crap and automatically believe that since it is in writing it must be true.
I'm sure there will be plenty games much better than Doom 3 coming out in 2003-2004. There's hundreds of games better than Half Life and UT2003. The media just loves to spoonfeed idiots bullshit reviews and tell you what to think.

Mad Max RW, I'm curious as to how much competition you think Doom 3 will have.
What I feel it's competition will be.
1.) Unreal 2
2.) XIII (MMMM, Cell-shady)
3.) PC-ported Halo (might be cool.)
4.) Kreed (looks like a challenge for Doom 3, but I don't know if it's still being worked on.)
5.) Duke Nukem Forever (It could happen.)
If I'm missing any game you figure could blow D3 out of the water, let me know.

ya your right but whater ya gonna do that's the press for ya, they always find ways of gripping you into their traps. They wouldn't call it whole life because halflife means something in science it means the amound of time for radioactive decay to occour one time to a radio active isotope or something along those lines also blue shift also means something it means that an object from space is moveing closer to the earth, if you use a spectroscope and point it at a star it will split the light from the star into a spectrom thus the scientists can determin what elements are in a star also if the spectrom is a little on the blue side then it means it is moveing closer and they call that blue shift and red shift is the same thing but the star is moveing away form the earth and the spectrom is a bit on the red side. Anyway back to my point about halflife not being named wholelife it's also because they want to probably keep the tradidtion of incorperating real science terms with their science based game and also because it is a sequel. Phew i'm done now sorry for the science lesson but it's just that i learned that a few months ago and i just wanted to say it to someone other then my friends.

Deathgiver, I don't care about competition between games. It's always petty bullshit. People start taking games too seriously and go to war with each other on how Doom's bump mapping is better than Unreal's or something equally pointless. Or how one sold more copies than the other so it must be the better game. The 5 you mentioned are basically the most famous because of their developers.
A game most of you probably never heard of looks like it will beat Doom and all other games in every way possible. Except for sales, because the gaming industry is run by virtual rockstars like Carmack. Anything associated with him always sells really damn well. Somehow id hasn't made a "new" game in years.
I'm not saying Doom 3 will be bad. It's more than likely going to be really damn kickass, but there's a lot more to it than building on a popular franchise. Originality is lacking in games these days. Digging for gems is getting harder and harder.

I aggree that competition between games is a pretty dumb idea. Any game I get has to earn a permenent place on HD based on it's own merits & not because it came from cool developer X. As an example I didn't care much for Quake 3 or UT.
Originality hmm, It's harder to be original these days, because just about everything has been done already.

I like originality. but it doesn't automatically qualify something as good. Quite often the things that attempt to be original come off as contrived and forced. And just because it looks like the same thing in bullet points doesn't mean it is.
Take film for instance, pretty much every film that has ever been made has the same 3 act structure: Equilibrium, disruption (the biggest middle portion) and a return to equilibrium at the end. But they still feel different, and there are many good films out there.
I think Doom3 will be incredible. Playing those 3 short alpha levels with headphones pulled me in more than any other game I have ever played. I actually found that sound is the scariest, most immersive thing in Doom3. And it did scare the shit out of me. It's been done before, but never as well as this. It's real easy to point at almost anything and say it's not original, but it's a little short-sighted as well.
I don't entirely agree with people only liking games because they are from big developers. The average Joe gamer doesn't even take too much note of the developer judging from the people I've known. They are far more sold by gimmicky "cool" little features, same as any other media, things which are evidently "cool" market themselves the best. Soldier of Fortune 1's succes for example. It wasn't the greatest of games, but you could throw a knife into someones leg and have it stick there, so it sold real well. Basically the game was marketed solely on it's gore system, like having ultra-accurate location damage really adds anything to the gameplay after the novelty has worn off. It's gimmicks like that which sell games the best.
Anyway, I agree about people taking up games or developers as a cause. I mean, it's a fucking preference - take your choice and leave it at that. It's like with the doom source ports - people somehow feel they have a responsibility to their port which involves completely blindsiding any decent advantages the other ports have.
Anyway, yeah, I think Doom3 will be better than Half-life at being Doom3. And vice versa. Take games on their own ground, you don't even have to have a personal "best" game, they are often good for different reasons.

Ah here's my entrance.Half-life is a term used by nuclear physists to measure how long a substance will remain radioactive. they do it by calculating how long it'll go before it's half "dead" therefore the term Half-Life. And seeing as the game has a lot of stuff to do with radiation and boi stuff they namedd it half-life. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who say that and mean it.
Anyway, it looks like Unreal 2 dropped off the list as competition to Doom 3. It's getting some mediocre-bad reviews and everyone I'm talking to who already has it says the game is crap just as I predicted.

Return To Wolfenstein was wolf in name only, og wolf was much better...
Half Life is over rated and is by far not the best fps ever...
as for doom 3 no one can say until it comes out... but from the alpha... it will kick ass...
