View Full Version : Short Game or Long?

With the release of DooM III getting closer I'm starting to think about it more. Anyhow I'm wondering how much gameplay we'll get for our hard earned cash. Some of these games nowadays with thier big assed graphics and high polygon models, blah, blah, blah, can be a bit on the short side. **cough** Unreal II **cough** and I was hoping DooM III won't be one of these 'finish in 7 hours' games. What do you guys think?

I think I heard that it was supposed to take 18 hours to finish Doom 3.

heh. I'd like to see them pull of an 18 hour linear singleplayer game without it getting repetitive.

It should be as long as Half-Life but not linear so it has replay value. They said something about remaking some of the original DooM levels so that should be neat.

I think maps should sometimes have multiple exits and thus lead to different areas and shit. Speaking of levels, I hope you can go back through levels like in Half-Life.
Yeah it should be neat to see some of the original levels, if they actually do that.

I think we'll be able to do that.
I hope we will have some choice in the path we take.

Hmm, is that 18 hours PER difficulty? I imagine there's going to be several difficulties if it's anything like Id is use to doing (regardless of new technology stuff). It's possible that there'll be new places to go and stuff with different difficulties, since it is mission oriented. Also, being mission oriented, the higher difficulty, the more objectives there'll probably be. I'm saying it'll be well ofer 18 hours of game play.

I'm sure DooM III will be longer than Unreal II now that I've thought about it..

oh, man. ONLY 18 hrs? I beat Doom 2 in about 6 hours, and that was on ultra violence with out the codes! ( i just know all the "cliches" because I played Final Doom before I finally beat DOOM 2 with out cheats. By playing Plutonia, that game was hard, I gained lots of skills that helped me beat DOOM 2 in about 6 hours. Man, that was easy. I think I died 2 times from a arch vile.

More than likley I'll be able to complete this in a very shorta amount of time.
Here's all the games I've beat in 2 days.
Hitman 2
Unreal II
All the half-life games
Renegade
Ghost recon
And so on...
Basically every game I have has been completed in 2 days. Now that's nuts. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

If Doom III's gameplay will be on the short hand, you can always look forward to singleplayer mods, or create them yourself of course. If it's like to original Doom, it'll live just as long...

As long as I still play games I reckon I'll be playing the first Dooms. From the alpha I already know I'll love Doom3 and it's only gonna be better on release - but it's gonna a completely different game.

I bet there'll be 3 difficulties, easy, normal and hard with maybe a nightmare skill thrown in. I don't know of any games nowadays that have several difficulties. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
Hopefully there'll be lots of different objectives like you say which should help make the game longer playing. It also depends on how hard it is to figure out different puzzles. I hope they'll have some things set up like Half-Life where you have to find a generator to power a laser that you use to drill open a door then have to lure some big demon into the laser to kill it. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm12.gif
