I'd like to be optimistic, but this game's gonna suck. At best, it will be a good FPS, but not Doom. It will be like a Quake game with better graphics. Unless they put in the super fast walk and key card missions, but others might not like this. So, it'll suck. Can't they just leave it alone and let Doom live on as a great game and not a way to try to get more money. Just like how we think of TNT...

Agh. Kaiser. Ninja. You both are pissing me off, and it's not because I like Doom. But I don't think Kaiser's doing it intentionally.
If you have bothered to pay any attention to anything the guys at id have been saying through interviews in the past year and a half, you wouldn't be assuming what you are saying. The engine may be revolutionary, but they have been spending at least a year developing the actual storyline and game, balancing everything perfectly, creating a truly Doomy atmosphere and giving the game more than id games have ever had in the past decade. It's no longer just quantity, it's quantity AND quality. Like Max Payne. They have literally been treating the story for the game like a movie script.
So shut the hell up and stop being so goddamn ignorant. It makes you look like an idiot. Ninja, your comments are so fucking closed minded. If you think Doom is going to suck, why the hell are you even here?
The only exciting thing about the aforementioned article is the fact that it's finally confirmed two important things: they are demonstrating DOOM III at E3, and DOOM III is now the official title. That is not to say that "Names for New Doom?" is no longer--nobody said anything about a sub title http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

"Yes I have dreams where I am rescued by men:
my father, brother, husband, no one else.
Last night I dreamed my brother and husband
morphed into each other and rescued me
from a rat-infested apartment. "Run!"
he said, feral scampering at our heels.
And then we went to lunch at the Four Seasons."

I highly doubt they'll pull that again. I'm still peeved that Q III wasn't developed with a good SP game, which was tossed in only because UT came along with a Single Playing DM mode.

We can probably blame Activision for the lame name, as they're in charge of marketing, and I know from having worked there, how that has worked in the past... i.e., just slap a license on it and push it out the door.
Doom III as a name is not that bad, although it conjures up absolutely nothing in the imagination reflecting the game itself, but it's still the New Doom to me... and so will Doom IV http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Unlike Quake II & III, et al, Doom III is going to have lots of atmosphere, and hopefully it will give us that immersive feeling of fear, once again.

Yeah, hopefully the Doom guy will still be just the Doom guy, without affecting the story. Giving the main character his own name and personality is RPG stuff, and I am definitely not a roleplayer.
...Plus, if he had a name, I couldn't call him Doom Guy in POTI (http://gamix.org/poti) anymore. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Quake II's opening theme was merely "okay." I personally feel that it wasn't as great as it could have been, with the corny Star Wars-esque opening scene with the ship, and especially the facts that everything is blurry outside of software mode, and the speech is very hard to pick up over music and background sfx. Return to Castle Wolfenstein's opening wasn't very good either. Terrible voice acting and all. It seemed... old.
I do want another Half-Life with DOOM III. After beating Half-Life I was having trouble deciding whether I liked it better than Ultimate Doom. The story really made it a whole lot better! But if Doom can have what Half-Life had, PLUS a very scary atmosphere, then it's the best game in the world! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
That also includes Doom having no video cutscenes or opening scenes. I like Half-Life's method of incorporating you into -everything-.

Update on the Doom Guy's name jobby. I was just watching a video interview with John Carmack by Gamespot that took place at QuakeCon 2001. I didn't get to watch it when it was first distributed but now I can. http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/media/0,11100,469881,00.html
Well, during the first part of the interview, Carmack actually refers to the main character as the "Doom Guy." So this means that, as of August last year, he's still just the Doom Guy! And it's most likely that he hasn't been given a name or personal information since then, besides "you're in the army." http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Yay!

Hmmm, odd. When I was there they weren't calling it DOOM 3, but something else. Makes me wonder what else has changed.
Man, you guys are gonna fuckin DIE when you see the characters. Hell, to a degree even the environment is practically a character. And to think they've been working on it for a year and half since then. Woulda been nice to see all the characters in the game and not just the clay models but it was still cool. A really interesting process to go from sketch to game model too.

Well, Rellik, I guess since they're not calling it whatever they used to, you can tell us what it was going to be.
On the other hand, since Todd is sort of the only guy who's referred to it as Doom III, maybe it's just easier for him to call it that before they actually reveal what the game is called.

Not to sound like a know-it-all wanna-be, but if Activision announced the game officially as DOOM III(tm), then that's more than likely what it will be called.
It would only be counterproductive to waste any available PR value. It's part of Activision's job to dot and cross all respective i's and t's before they finally weighed in with their official announcement.
Like I said, I'm sure Activision had a lot to do with the final decision for the name, as that final decision falls under Marketing. You may think, well id Software can tell Marketing to go straight to hell, but if you knew how much work goes into publishing a title, you'd realize id needs Activision as much as the reverse.
I was working at Activision when Quake II was being developed and released, and even got to spend a week downstairs in QA helping game test it. I've seen the relationship between Activision and id from the inside.
And who knows, the reason why it took so long for the announcement for who was actually publishing it to be made, could have had as much to do with agreeing on the title, as anything else.
Like Zack said, maybe they'll still think of a cool subtitle?......

Oh, just one question: what is the Doom[3]Guy running and walking speeds? How faast gameplay (especially DEATHMATCH) will run? Who knows? Doom brings DM to us, there was DYNAMIC. Then id released Quake. It was fast too, but atmosphere and weapons were chaged (bad). Then QuakeII were released - they slowed gameplay down, but there are a lot of speedup tricks (huh, about tricks - run with strafing along north-facing wall in Doom2 - you'll feel the *speed* http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif ). Then they released that damned QuakeIII - slow as hell and no dynamic at all... Unfortunately everything is going to slow gameplay (Damned CounterStrike/HalfLife/Quake3 is an example). Hope id will did something good and retured gameplay to speeds at which it must be! Sorry for a lot of mistakes... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/frown.gif

Is all people can do is complain about what DooM 3 shoudln't be? What about what we think is should be? Personally, I'd like to see some pics of the hellish levels DooM has been known for. It seems all we've seen are the more technological levels, the ones that look like they're set in a spaceship or something. But I personally like the hell levels myself, which brings up another important topic: what ever happened to the guy in DooM 64? We all know he stayed there, and I even saw for a while advertised in a add from a game selling company a "Doom 64: Absolution." Now there's something to complain about, the fact that they made QIII instead of that! I loved DooM 64, and was looking forward to a sequel! As a Doom editor, I really wish I could make levels using the Doom 64 graphics.

if you want the music and sounds, just go to Doom Depot. (Link is in my site)
and yes you may borrow the resources only when its released.
good thing though, the Legacy version should be completed before July and the Zdoom version (which will be better) will be released shortly after.
