I'm posting this here instead of Rants & Raves so it won't be just some quick ephemeral conversation.
My brother was just showing me some pretty nasty deaths in the horror movie 'Thirteen Ghosts.' It got me thinking: I wonder if the guys at id Software are watching this movie and others, like the remake of House on Haunted Hill, etc, and if they're brainstorming ideas?
Most of us have heard about the shock through the audience as they watched the latest Doom "3" demo last year at QuakeCon.
I hope there is as much shock value in the game as has been anticipated, and as there was in the original Doom also. It was known for it's numerous ways to die. Wolfenstein 3D only let you die--you and other enemies simply were shot down. Some of the bosses had interesting deaths (like Hitler), though it didn't make much sense.
In Doom, you can get smushed and squished, torn inside out from an explosion, pummelled with bullets, and set on fire, and enemies also have much cooler death sequences, such as the Mancubus folding in on itself, the Cacodemon deflating with its eye falling out, the Baron of Hell's skin "melting" down, and the Cyberdemon exploding in a shower of blood. The Quakes also had their high points with the first "real" gibs.
I'm curious as to what insanely gruesome, disgusting, and just plain disturbing deaths we all can come up with that we can hope to see in the game. Doom "3" is a horror story, and the modern day horror genre needs these things. Face it: The Excorcist, Jaws, and Poltergeist just aren't scary. At all. We need clear shots of freak deaths like the beheadings in Sleepy Hollow, the jack-o-lantern corpse of that girl in Halloween H20, the guy getting split in two from head to toe by a sheet of clear glass in Thirteen Ghosts, the mysterious gutted remains of Ms. Marr in House on Haunted Hill. Huge facial wounds, bodies being crushed at the waist, helpless gas fires incinerating a man's face, a la Sphere. That moron who was crushed at the waist into two pieces in the Tomb Raider movie toward the end of the final fetch quest, as he climbed onto the (wrong) spinning branch of the machine. The melting skin guy, the caving-head-in guy, and the exploding-head-into-hundreds-of-pieces guy in the firey "opening of the ark" scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spine-crunching corners in Thirteen Ghosts. Heads cut open and the contents scraped out a la Saving Private Ryan, Starship Troopers, and House on Haunted Hill. Lots of things in Saving Private Ryan and Starship Troopers also. And, of course, just about every nasty (though disappointingly cartoonish) fatality in the Flash cartoon series, "Happy Tree Friends."
I want Doom "3" to give me a headache from such excessively horrifying and violent human deaths. Please don't think I would ever enjoy seeing something like that in real life, or anything of the like. I don't want anybody thinking I'm a sick person. If horror movie producers do it, id Software can do it too, and better!
What ideas can you guys all think of, original or from a movie or book? It may be too close to the release date (as far as we know) right now for any more ideas to be implimented into the actual game, but this is the Wish List forum, anyway. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
