View Full Version : Doom III

I know we can hardly wait, but I was thinking... do we really want to see pictures/tests/demos of DooM III? I mean, I think Quake III Arena was ruined by the fact it looks and feels the same as its Test version, and as such you had seen all the new stuff before buying it! The same happened with Quake: nearly all the weapons were there in the Test, and when the shareware version appeared it had all the weapons in it, as well as nearly all the baddies!
My idea is perhaps we should hope for the same thing iD did with Doom I, and that is just release it. No publicity. No adverts, no D3TEST1 or any such stuff. I mean, look at it this way: do iD really need publicity to sell their games? Surely they would sell on their history of good gameplay alone, and as such do you think DooM III should be released this way?

Well I would love to see screenies!
But like they said, the most powerful computers right now will run it decently, so that means if they release a test next year, we won't be able to play it that well.

I don't want to see too much, just a few screenies and I won't be checking out any demos.. I think your right Lanceb, they should release the game without giving too much away.

Well, maybe if they DO release a test, it should be a few weapons, and a simple test map, even if it's part of a whole map, or a deathmatch map, whatever.
Giving too much away does ruin it somewhat.

The tests they give away are for bug reports. Of course that can be solved by hiring a betatester instead of letting the fans do the work. This would also be an advantage to id, because, who would want to sort out all those repetitive "I found the most common bug" emails?

Hm... I don't know, actually... I haven't given it very much thought, but here's my quick conclusion:
The natural hype that builds up before a game's realease is jolly nice. But if this hype can't find its foundation in news, screenshots, trailers, alphas, demos and so on, perhaps this hype will take outrageous turns, and then, when the game is released, an entire community looks upon it and reaches the conclusion that it isn't what they've been building up within their minds for some years of time. Or something... I don't know really, I'm quite tired right now...
Another way to look at it:
I basically think people will go insane if there are NO news, NO screenshots and NO alphas or demos. But on the other hand, too much shouldn't be given away before the actual release of the game, just look what happened with about 50% of what was to become the Q3 community; people grew tired of the game before it was even released, or they judged it out before it could stand a fair chance.
I guess I have reached my final conclusion:
Enough game info/screenshots/alpha or demo versions should be released, to keep the natural hype alive and healthy, but without draining the community of its power, and destroy the factor of surprise.
Keep in mind that this is just my personal thoughts, and it's quite foggy inside my head right now, since I'm quite tired.
And on a sidenote: tomorrow is my birthday http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif and on Friday, the Doom books (Doom: Knee-deep in the Dead, and Doom: Hell On Earth) will probably show up in my mailbox. I look forward to some interesting reading.

How about them releasing a demo that only has one level, and some lame enemies such as the possessed and chainguys? Maybe an imp or two. Two weapons or something. But thats all. Leave all the HOLY **** stuff like BFG 9000 or the Cyberdemon/Spider Mastermind until the final release...hm?

Yeah, I was thinking perhaps a three level demo, featuring maybe 5 or so weapons (like how the original Doom shareware had all up until the rocket launcher, and no amount of scummy cheating could get you the plasma or BFG, just the way it should be...) and maybe 5 normal baddies and a boss creature.
Its just that all of iDs three previous games have been ruined by the tests/demos. All three show you nearly everything, including the basic level twists. Whereas DooM had most of its better levels in episodes 2 & 3, causing shareware players to miss out on some of the cooler levels. And iD were right to not release a Doom II demo...

Yep. If they do release a beta, as I mentioned, release a level, or part of one, and the rest is pretty much what we're all said.
As for small conclusions, that wasn't very small. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

I agree with King REoL.....if they do release a demo, it should be a one map or part of a map demo.

I was just thinking... what are you're views, on a similar subject, namely the manual. Should the manual for the New DooM game contain the ememies/weapons in full? Should they contain any except the basics?
One thing that always annoyed me is the fact the DooM ][ manual always gave away all the new enemies, the one new weapon etc. I think perhaps they should only list a few items, leaving some for the player to discover!!
What are everyones views on this subject? Comments?

In terms of the beta, just enough detail should be given, ala the Quake series.
Although, the Quake series manuals never gave you the pics or descriptions of ALL the enemies, and I'm sure DooM III will be the same.
A few more not given away would be nice, but you need some preparation as for what's to come.

The manual should give the player enough info to get him / her started. Hopefully they'll leave out some of the monsters and weapons so that we'll have a few surprises during the game.

I like that idea, but you know that will never happen, unless id actually wants user input, other than for bug reports.
I'll bet that the only monsters not shown will be a few of the new bosses that you'll face, but yeah, I'd like a bit more of a mystery.
Text-only descriptions would even be better, even if it's only a few monsters. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

yeah...if Doom 3 releases a beta it should be part of the first level or the whole first level....but i never considered or thought about the fact that they would give away too much about the game in the betas...and i'm only getting it if i can download it..i was able to do the same for Doom 2 (full version) they should make a Doom 3 full version download SOMEWHERE on the internet. (ugh forget what i said about the downloading -.-)

The best thing about DooM for me was that my younger brother had installed it without me knowing. I knew the game was somewhat like Wolfenstein so I played it. I didn't have any descriptions or anything so the "HOLY SHIT!!!!!" factor was really huge. I played the Q3 test and got bored of that game really fast though. They'd better not do that again.

the best thing about Doom for me would be if they made a full version download of it SOMEWHERE on the internet. (For Doom 3. I'd be glad to tell ya all where a Doom 2 full version is for anyone that don't have it...but i'm pretty sure all of ya do http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm16.gif )
(You pretty much i think need the original doom 2 (fullversion) to play all the doom 2 conversions on the site so all of you SHOULD have the full version of doom 2 if i'm not mistaken. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif)

You guys are missing the point. First of all when doom I and doom2 were release there was less need for beta testing. There were no 100 different types of 3d cards and other sucky stuff like that. Computers have become so diverse beta testing is more of a nessesity. It was not an option is was a need to have people test Quake 3. In the case of doom 3 - well i think its only called doom3 for marketing reasons my guess it will be just as simerlar the original doom as any other 1st person shooter. Dont u know the game industry turned to shit. Look at xbox great graphics no originality no good games even the controler sucks. I bet these doom ports on newdoom are problably more fun then doom3 will ever be.

I don't its the fun factors going to count, but the fear factor thats going to give the game life .Remember the e1m2 maze, that wasn't necisarly the funnest thing to do in the world, but the need to overcome your fear and venture into the unknown what mainly made the game.

That maze was awesome! Those mazes were one of the best things about DooM. Judging from that movie, the fear factor should be there. I just hope it's a faster paced and less linear game than most of the recent ones. Duke3D was the last game to have really fast gameplay that I can see. Everything else is really linear.

Trilinear, not on this card (unless I run under software GL which yields about 5fps). But I do have my eyes set on that new Xtasy 6964.
