I think one thing that would make single player doom real cool without spoiling it would be more certain, role playing style additions. The player should be able to progress through a basic and subtle character level based system to improve skills etc. Obviously you dont want to incorporate lock picking and shit but to be able to somehow improve: running speed, strength, jumping, weapon skill (accuracy, reload rate)etc. That would be sweet, but this needs to be done without complicating the arcade style action.

Also with the weapons, although I know this isnt gonna happen, I wish that there was a huge ass range of weapons to choose from, instead of just 10 or whatever. But these weapons need only be slightly varied within theyre category. For example, at least 5 different kinds of shotgun, each with different advantages and disadvantages, not just that there is one that is the best. Sort of like the weapon system in Counter Strike where u must make intelligent weapon desicions based on ur predicament.

I would also like to see a wider range of melee and non projectile weapons. Such as blades, fire axes and lots of different objects that can be found along the way. That would give it a real 'fighting for your life' feeling. Imagine running out of bullets as a hord of Imps approach, so u ditch the gun and proceed to smash they're heads in with the brick that is on the ground! Thats what violence is all about. Hehe.

that would ruin it, CS just isn't id type stuff, besides where would our favorite doom marine get all this stuff?

He could find special weapons in special areas.
Or you could have things like, a possesed marine commander and his whole platoon thingy are on his team and you gotta battle them all. And the commander has special powers and a sick weapon like a stronger, more efficient laser rifle than u have, or an uprgrade for it like a cooling unti, that you cant get anywhere else. And he is real hard to kill, inteligent, strong etc. I think it would be cool. Even if you dont HAVE to battle them, but if you want to access that special area they are guarding... And they could use team tactics etc

I dont want DOOM to be like CS. I dont even like CS! I was just saying that weapon variation ADDS to gameplay. I dont think any of these ideas would spoil DOOM. They would add to it without taking anything away. Or does everyone want DOOM3 to be another find the keys and flick the exit switch game?

DOOM is old now. I still love it. Its still a better play than most, no wait, nearly all new games(for me). Thats because they did the absolute best that they could have with the technology they had (with a few minor exceptions obvously but that doesnt matter).

DOOM3 needs something to make it stand out from the croud. The DOOM name is not going to do it alone. But I jope ID are not satisfied with another run of the mill shooter. This is DOOM! There should be things unseen in the genre, just like the first time around. Melee combat should be more advanced, without adding any more comlexity. Secondary fire for nearly all weapons (inluding melee weapons) is a must. There needs to be more than one way to mash up a demon with the chainsaw. I want each dead body in the pile to look different this time.

eg:
1.Frontal chainsaw attack- Direct stabbing attack where range is extended to make it more effective. Can be sidestepped in multiplayer if timed right.
2.Swinging chainsaw attack- Like that of the grunts from Quake, but can be ducked if timed right. Otherwise u get ur head chopped off.

This would be great fun in multiplayer. Whole maps could be made with no projectile weapons, just get in close and chop em up. An unarmed, experienced player could kill a chainsaw armed newbie with his bare hands, using skill. A marine will do anything to kill an enemy. Obviously projectile weapons are the prefferd method and should be the main focus, but why not add a little melee variation, just for fun???

The list goes on...just try to imagine the possibilities, and think outside the DOOM u live in. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm7.gif
