I think one thing that would make single player doom real cool without spoiling it would be more certain, role playing style additions. The player should be able to progress through a basic and subtle character level based system to improve skills etc. Obviously you dont want to incorporate lock picking and shit but to be able to somehow improve: running speed, strength, jumping, weapon skill (accuracy, reload rate)etc. That would be sweet, but this needs to be done without complicating the arcade style action.
Also with the weapons, although I know this isnt gonna happen, I wish that there was a huge ass range of weapons to choose from, instead of just 10 or whatever. But these weapons need only be slightly varied within theyre category. For example, at least 5 different kinds of shotgun, each with different advantages and disadvantages, not just that there is one that is the best. Sort of like the weapon system in Counter Strike where u must make intelligent weapon desicions based on ur predicament.
I would also like to see a wider range of melee and non projectile weapons. Such as blades, fire axes and lots of different objects that can be found along the way. That would give it a real 'fighting for your life' feeling. Imagine running out of bullets as a hord of Imps approach, so u ditch the gun and proceed to smash they're heads in with the brick that is on the ground! Thats what violence is all about. Hehe.
