View Full Version : I just want the real thing

When you take the readme or something that comes with Doom, which explains the story, it says that you have fell behind, your fellows have entered the base, blah blah. You hear awful combat sound and silence. Than you go to investigate, blah blah. This time I want to live that part, because it was never delivered! Hell, Doom starts with you in a room, with a door in your back. Which was pretty cool in 1994 but see, the beginning of any story is very delicate, because that part is responsible for all the mood that comes. When I saw the intro movie in Quake ][, I went like "hey, here is that intro they forgot to put in Doom!"

Other things:
-Why never again were we able to send an enemy like 2 to 10 ft. backwards after a massive close range shotgun blast? Sometimes even falling off cliffs or "rolling down" stairs. That was key for Doom coolness, and it´s sad to see that no Quake or any other FPS reproduces that. Nowadays, it´s just like cutting the strings of a puppet, it´s just a scripted fall. id guys: dynamic skeletal behavior is the future.

-I don´t want to sneak behind a zombie soldier to find him waiting for something doing that kind of standstill break-dance. He was your pall in the Marine Corp., but he saw so much horror that his brain has fried. I picture this: you´re walking in the dark, and start to hear this sound, like someone sobbing and moaning. Closing in, you realize that in the distance there is a soldier like you, so afraid that he is hiding in the corner. When he sees you, he screams like hell and go for you, trying to rip you apart. Of course you kill him, but is a sad thing. You´ve seen his desperate eyes, he was not the same man you once knew. You just can imagine what´s responsible for his state, and if you can possible end the same way. Now, that´s horror, not a soldier with blood in his shirt waiting around the corner.

-What´s wrong with real life guns? Game designers go insane trying to imagine new lightning, plasma or whatever crap. I say: Just look at Shooter´s Bible, Guns Digest or something. Of course Doom is in the future, but c´mon: the coolest guns always where the shotgun and the machine-gun. Developers: understand now the success of Half-Live?

-Final point: will the media accept Doom with open arms? I´ve never seen that topic, and it´s critical. I can see right now CNN reporting the new Doom, showing rivers of blood and some demons, and than some pictures of the students killed in the school massacre of the month.

You're absolutely right. I do agree with every factor you point out. I really liked it when I happen to stick my super shotgun up a possessed's chest and send him flying back. That is not the case in Quakes. They always stay where they were when they get killed. A good pushback would be perfect. Hell, those flying creatures in Quake2 always drop straight down when killed.

I also really like it when I see a possessed or imp roll down the stairs. Thats one great thing I like about Doom, and I do hope that the New Doom still has the monsters falling back when killed. That will help for falling down a cliff, rolling down a slope or stairs, or off a balcony. It would certainly add to the eerie feeling if the enemies are only half dead, you can hear them grunt every time they roll down.

I like the way Half Life renders blood splats, they look realistic when someone got shot. Not all those standardized splats, but more randomized, vary in size and intensity. When someone gets gibbed in HL, their body parts are sent flying across the room, thats also good.

I like your idea about past marine mates, those who got scarred or lost their sanity after seeing those demonic envoironment, that they are beyond help. They would be a nuisance to you, and/or hurt you. The only way would be to put them out of their misery. Kinda like Quake2 marines, who walks around begging for mercy. But it might also be nice if they sometimes would aid you in your journey. I don't know if I would like this idea, since DooM is focused on single player, so having aides, like Half Life, helping you on your voyage might will ruin the DooM feeling.

And as for the public, I highly doubt it will be permitted to be advertised. It would be rated adult, since id Software says they are working on a NEW ENGINE, and we all know Quake3 is pretty good. We can imagine what John Carmack can come up for the New Doom. It would probably be too scary for young children or minors to play the game. Now thats DooM! You would always be a bit nervous about what is around the next corner or behind the door in front of you.

Thats all I can think of now.

Now that you've mentioned Half-Life's blood (which is a good point, since is one of the best implementations of that subject to date), another thing just occurred to me: gibbs. Yes, gibbs. I mean (luckily) I've never personally see a man getting hit by a rocket, but I don't think what's left looks like 4 pieces of barbecue meat. I mean, it would look cooler if it's like that Predator guy (Jesse Ventura, isn't it?) who's chest just opens wide, or something more like it, as in Saving Private Ryan, where pieces fly, but coherently to damage that the body takes. (Ok, that seems sadistic, but I'm just trying to express myself clearly).

There's nothing wrong with real life guns, but having _only_ real life guns in Doom would be outrageously wrong. I love the plasma weapons, they're essential to Doom.

Yes I like the plasma gun. I am sure id Software will keep the gun there.

Well, see, I didn´t say that I want JUST real life weapons. Just that Doom had like 70% of "real life weapons" when implemented. (pistol, shotgun, vulcan machinegun, double barrel shotgun, even the rocket launcher can be considered real-life). That could be the case again. Anyway, with a new engine, the possibilities are huge. Seems we have forget some details, like the infra-red glasses powerup. In the original Doom, it just makes the room 100% clear, despite the sector light proprieties. This time, it could be like the Predator vision in Alien Vs. Predator. There are some different modes to choose. Maybe this time, how about some "transparent" monsters that you can only see at a given infra-red mode? Hard core stuff, but no one said it would be easy. Are we Space Marines or chickens?
