How's that for an appropriate Subject? I couldn't think of anything better.

Doom_Dude said something in the favorite Doom monster topic in the Classic Doom forum. He mentioned something like you knowing Carmack and he'd fix something in Doom for you.

Well, a long time ago, I met Carmack on ICQ. You probably wouldn't believe me (Mystican and the #doomroom freaks sure don't), but he pretty much proved it to me. I found him on the first day he was on ICQ, and we chatted several times before he, I assume, considered it no better than IRC and drifted away from it. I guess he got bombarded or something.

Anyway, the log is lost behind several reformats, but what Doom_Dude mentioned reminded me of one of the conversations Carmack and I had. This was a while before Quake 3's release, I suppose 8 or 9 months, give or take half a year. But Carmack was telling me how he had fooled around with the Doom code a little bit and made it true 3D!

Well, I told him about the GLDoom port (the only true 3D Doom at the time) but he never responded to me after that. But it did get me thinking.

Carmack might have something up his sleeve. Maybe, in attempt to keep the great feeling Doom has, he has kept the same engine base! Maybe he's simply taken the Doom source and is revamping it to the latest technology, yet still retaining it's original Doomishness. Maybe he's using the same code he designed from 8 or 9 months ago! Give or take half a year.

I for one would be up to something like that! It'd be perfect, if you think about it. I hope that's how things are doing over at id.

How dare you call me a freak. I've never met you or talked with you and up till now I'd have no right to call you any name, although I am perfectly within my rights to form opinions about you based on your unprecedented actions.

hrmmm lots of new comers to the forums, all defending doomroom etc and calling Zack a liar... lemme guess.... #doomroom has this forum URL as its topic?? Geez those folks like going through these forums looking for any chance to flame don't they? Well I can say this right now, **** OFF. lamers.

Well I guess I was right... did a bit of snooping at #doomroom.. and that is their topic... hrmm but i guess i was too stupid to hide my true identity and got myself banned... lol like I care. But anyway... can someone please explain what is wrong with a lot (not all) of the people in #doomroom and doomworld? They seem to have a serious tolerance problem... I don't know the history behind either newdoom, doomworld or #doomroom really.. but can someone please explain this whole situation to me? Newdoom seems to be the only place free of lamers...

First of all there's no way Carmack would keep working on the old Doom source code.

Second of all, Zack is full of **** . If there was something monumentally groundbreaking I did such as his conversation with Carmack, I would save the log, no ifs ands or buts. He lied about the conversation, or perhaps he's just delusional enough to believe it.

Let's not forget the phenomenal amount of fake "Carmack"s on ICQ shall we?

My $2 million.

You're right about all the fake Carmack ICQ accounts out there... just do a quick search and you'll see... but I'll wait for Zack's response before I immediately dismiss what he says. At least give him a chance to speak eh?

Now wtf am I still doing on these forums... GRRR back to work!

Sorry Zack, I don't remember you trying to tell this story in #doomroom, but I can certainly see why it lacks credibility.

Oh yes, and I'm a freak :P

Stop flaming Zack. His theory was presented as just that: A THEORY.

Didn't Carmack say that the code for the new doom would be written from scratch?

tom underscore: Yes, I am full of a four letter word. I'm full of Doom! There's no reason for me to be ashamed.

Jon the Frad: When I mentioned #doomroom, I meant the Doom regulars on EfNet in general, and that goes for all of #doomroom and #doom2. I didn't call you specifically a freak.

arioch: Why wouldn't he want to play with the old Doom source code? If you've ever coded a program, even a script, and distributed it, you'd have played around with it a little more after its release. And 5 or 6 years later, if you look at it again, you might still want to play with it a little and bring it up to par. I know from experience. Yes, as tom underscore has already stated, I am full of Doom. Thanks for the compliment! I did not lie about the conversation, YOU DID! You're just afraid that I got to talk with the legendary Carmack and you didn't. Like I already said, I don't have the logs because I had to reformat my HD more than once! And one of those times I was in a fid of rage and hadn't even thought about saving anything.

Yes, the fake "John Carmack"s on ICQ are quite numerous. Of course, I wasn't looking for "John Carmack." I know his ICQ alias. And when I first found him, there were no more than two or three "John Carmack"s.

Mewse, the reason you don't remember that story is because you were somewhere on Undernet or something when I was there. It was EfNet #doom2. From what I've seen, you've all moved to #doomroom, so when I say #doomroom and am talking about 12 or 18 months ago, I am referring to #doom2.

Doom_Dude: Tu che, my good man. He DID say that. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Phraggle: I have to compliment your shrewdness. I guess I called you a moron out of rage, but you really are smart. Nobody else had the slightest hint that it was me showing up in #doomroom incognito today.

Prower: Dude, I knew you since September 1998, but had no clue you named yourself after Tails the Fox from Sonic the Hedgehog. You're cool! Is KNorton still around? I wonder if he took after Pinky, from Pinky and the Brain!

And now I must go. Peace from a Doomer,

Thanks for the apology, but I am a doom regular on efnet in general, in particular #doomroom, and as such you did insult me as well as many other people.

And if the topic was this thread in the doomroom, surely that makes sense? If it is related to the doomroom in some way, or even doom if we are to be fair, then it is of interest to the doomroom isn't it? Incidentally I stumbled across this little morsel from a different source.

Well it's hard to believe that they will program the game code entirely from scratch. Why would they do that when they have perfectly good code just lying around on the id computers...............millions upon millions of lines of code just sitting there abandoned. I don't get it, but then again I'm no programmer.

Well I'd answer you, but John Carmack happens to agree with me perfectly in the recent interview...go read it now and get your question answered http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

I really wonder how they will code the AI routines. I think perhaps scratch coding might actually be a good idea if it means that better AI and such will be the end result.

Hey, well isn't that nice. Zack is happy http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.

How much code, do you think they have finished? 6 million lines or so?
