If somehow id software came here, and asked YOU what your one wish you want to see in the New DooM game (and it will be granted), what would it be?

The most advanced Video Game Engine the World has ever seen, supporting the highest polygon counts feasible, and every possible special graphical effect known to computer scientists.

A game engine so far beyond Quake III Arene, it will set a brand new precedent for the Gaming industry. PC's in 5 years will still be wringing out little details and extra's. It will take till then, and 10Ghz machines, befor anyone can really say they've "played" it.
A level of reality that leaves little to be desired, but a faster faster faster PC to run it on, "how me' gonna' git a faster PC to Live in this world ? I don't never wanna' leave this artificial reality !"

Of course, it will be system scalable, so all us fools with our sub-Gigahertz rust buckets can kinda' play it...sort of.
( 640*480, 32bit, going "chugga-chugga-chugga" at 28FPS )

If only so that this new Doom installment will last through the next decade ! If the engine is insane enough, it might just stand a chance to outlast the old Doom in terms of playability.
Heck, maybe our kids will sit playing it in the basement on super "useless" ancient 10Ghz PC's with a measly 1GB of PC-800 RDRAM. Like we do with Pong today.

Then they will say something like "**** this old ****ing piece **** of **** and **** what the **** is this **** **** ****some ***** lets go smash it in **** the back ****ing yard for fun, ****ing Dad won't mind **** this is ****ing useless."
( They will talk like that then, every other word will be a four-letter word http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Such an engine will really eat up our hard drive space, and probably a CD ROM won't be enough. Need 4 or 5 CD's or one DVD!

I want pants.

Oh, DooM III wishes. Uhh, great archetecture, with the curves and angles (of course), but keeping in touch with the DooM feel we know and love.
Not to say multi-story fun won't work, either.
How 'bout a free DooM III PC in a contest, specifically rigged for the game? http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

REol takes his pants off as soon as he turns on his PC.
All the free porn movies, live web cams, tristed chat rooms and freaks on icq and Microsoft Instant Messenger and stuff demand that he be ready at all times.

You know, like the Duke would say, "Yeah, ready for action".

I hope they leave it at the cartoon like quality of game. Realism has its spot in life, but why in games ? For realism try the job of mercenary.

I have always thought that a game was supposed to be a game after all !

I think they will one day have 2 versions of a game at the same time. The Ultra real version, that will be all...well, realistic.
Then there could be this other included version, which is super real looking maybe
( you can adjust the level of realism) But is not realistic, like ammo carry ability, health regeneration etc etc.

2 versions of the same game included in the same box

Look, MechWarrior 3 was really hard, complex etc. But Mech 4 will be way simpler.
That alienates all the people who thought M3 was finally realistic ! Just when they get it right, it's too "hard" for some dumb asses, so they have to back off in the next sequel. That is stuipid.
Just have 2 versions then. Or more custom setup's, with dozens of extra movements for expert players.

I don't do pr0n. Gore, I look at, out of curiosity. You'd be sick to look at that stuff for fun.

Anyhoo, I DO wear pants, and I like the thought of the archetecture being the classic 1-story, multi-height classic feel. If played right, 2+ floors won't hurt the game, either.

If I could ask for anything in the new Doom, it'd be me! My name showing up, a picture of me, or even a 3d model of me walking around. That'd be so cool, if millions of people saw this dude in a videogame and it was me http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Even better would be me dying somehow, whether in realtime (like a Half-Life scientist dying), or in a picture or sprite (like Romero's head on a stick). Suh-weet!

Maybe scalable detail for those with measily 2GHz PC's can play it, too.
Kinda' like Q3:A, plus, a shrink/expand view window that doesn't require a video reset either.

The only time I ever needed to use those resize-windows was when I played Doom II for the second time at my friend's house on his 386 or 486. (The first time I played it was at Best Buy, and it was actually on playable display! I showed everybody the cheat codes, but couldn't figure out why IDSPISPOPD wouldn't work :P) Anyway, this kid's PC was so extremely slow, I had to shrink the screen to the minimum size to be able to play a smooth game. And then the detail sucked.

Seriously, do today's games still even have those? I haven't even thought about shrinking the screen smaller than needed to view the status bar(s) in years!

REoL
November 13th, 2000, 03:06 PM
Q3:A has a shrinkable window, and I almost notice no real major difference in speed.

I remember playing DooM on 386/20's, and even with a postage stamp view, low detail on, I'd get 3FPS, with refreshes every 100 degrees of turning. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

The new DooM will no doubt hook up to new vitual reality gear, so that we can disappear for days into the world of DooM.

I know ReoL has already reserved a pair of VR pants, just to be ready for DooM III's release.

No. I don't have any money vested into that stuff, but I am watching the fliers from Best Buy, Sears, and so on, to see what high-end PC's are available, and go for one before DooM III is slated to (actually) hit the shelves.

I remember playing DooM on my 386 with the screen reduced to about half size. what a great improvement it was when I increased my memory to 5 Mb and could actually play the game at full screen.

Maybe they could make a version of DooM III that could actually run on a 386. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/wink.gif

I remember going from a 380-sux/20 to a 380-sux/33, and I could play full screen, low detail easilly. The extra 13MHz made it playable.

I'm asking for a very simple thing. I want the same type of atmosphere that was in the original Doom. I want to fear rounding a corner, I want to jump out of my frigg'n seat when I come face to face with a "NEW" enemie. Don't rehash the original enemies in 3D!

Basically I want the same heartstopping action and fear that I felt when I played Doom for the first time!

iD, listen to us! We have ideas, we are going to be buying the game! Give us a chance to voice our idea's to you!

I'm sure there will be new monsters. These newer games have more than the games of old, even DooM II, so I'm sure in the end, there will be the old brood, and several new guys, maybe one or two even tougher than the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind. Maybe tougher than those two combined. Who knows?

They just better not blow this one! http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm sure it would be scary, IF it was the first time you have seen him. But seeing as we have seen him now for years. I'd like to see them get the original crew back together... but I know that won't happen.

I just think iD needs to really work on it's models. IMO Quake had the worst damn monsters I have seen. Quake II was better, and Quake III well no comment. But they need to get modellers in there with imagination!

I'd like to see maybe 1 or two of the old DooM monsters, but that's about it. No MORE! Please just bring us new ones. Look at Return to Wolfenstein, that games looks absolutely amazing AND they have created new enemies, there are no white clothed SS etc. (well at least anyways <G> ).

I'd like to see it just stay a game (vs. True Reality) and just be fun. I'd like to see the old enemies (but rarely, not everywhere). I'd think it be neat if there was a limit to how many times a monster could reappear in the game. I think that would keep the game much more interesting. I also like the "blood squirting" effects in some games. I think 3D floors would be nice if used correctly.

Zack
December 11th, 2000, 06:30 PM
Doom was the only game with moving floors. Why is that? Think of things such as E2M3. I think that was supposed to origianlly be squirming guts that you had to get over (in one of the rooms behind the caco cage). I'd like to see that get attempted just one more time, only in the NeoDoom engine!

REoL
December 12th, 2000, 02:28 AM
Uhh...I remember Quake, and definately Quake II, having moving floors.

Maybe with the DooM III engine, we'll be able to see moving guts as real as it can almost get, ala Quake III, just better.
