One really cool thing about the old Doom is the fact that at anytime, you can crank it up, choose the level you wanna play, from a list, and play the level. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/cool.gif

I hope to see that part of the game launcher, make a comeback. In other games you can only warp to specific levels if you know the cheat code.

Yeah, I wan't the map list thing in the New Doom! What do you guys think ??

I think you don't know what you're talking about. Doom wasn't the only game that had its levels listed numerically! Every existing game before Doom was the same way, because of its simplicity. Quake, also, was numbered by episodes and missions, just like Doom 1, except that there was the availability of other names besides E#M#.

After Quake, Quake 2 and Half-Life, using the same engine, were built to use non-linear levels. You could go from one level to another, and from there to a third, and from that place to the very first again, in a different location, just the way you left it. For this reason, the levels couldn't possibly be numbered, because they had no actual order. So they were just named like any file would be. (Half-Life's map names had more of a 'pattern' to them, though.) Quake 3 may also allow any filename for maps, but the standard levels are once again numbered, for easy access.

So you don't know what you're talking about!

....or at least I don't. :)

Yo doom dude! I agree with you totally and see what you're saying. It was easy just to choose a level, choose a difficulty and away you go with no hassle of consoles and trying to figure out the level number.

I think Zack is a bit drunk.

BUT WAIT! There is just this thing that I wouldn't want...
It'd be dumb if as soon as you bought the game you could start the last level. I think you should only be able to play the levels you have completed and you can only play it on the difficulties you have done it on.

With no cheats!

Arrgh. You are SO 1993!

Modern day Single-Player calls for REALISM. You can't jump to a level with a cyb, equipped with a pistol and no armor!

Urrrrrrrr. You dudes just gave me a freaking headache. Okay so maybe it wouldn't work.

Look Zack, if they use a hub system in the New Doom like in Quake 2, then the launcher could let you start the hub of your choosing. The hubs that you finished would appear in the launcher.

Furthermore all the levels in the first Quake are playable as individuals, thank you very much. As long as you know the name of the map, you can execute it from the console. And they play just fine without having to go through every map before hand. Some weapons are missing and so what! If you launch a map 14, 22, etc..... in Doom, you don't get all the gear from the previous maps either.

I wouldn't expect to see a launcher for a game like Half~Life, because of the way the level transitions are geared.

So who the hell knows what kind of map system they will use. I don't know.

WAIT!!!!
How about this...
when you get to a new level it sort of saves it at the very beginning (even before a cut scene). Then when launching doom at that level you've completed then you would have the guns, health and other stuff that you had when you got there. I don't want really want to have to save it myself which I do in most games at the beginning of each level so once I completed it I can go back to my favourite levels.

And Zack! How are we so 1993? We just want the perfect game with all the perfect options.

I like Ralph's idea. Of course, if you want to play a game through from the beginning a second time, and then want to warp to a certain level after you complete it twice, which game would have saved?

Perhaps, each time you make it to the next level in a New game, it will save for that particular started game, specified by the time you began playing it. That would work well!

Beauty! I like it King_Ralph! That would be the ideal modification of the launcher / save game thingie. Yeah, sounds very 2000ish.

Hey, 1993 was a great year and I can't say 2000 is any better .

That's three votes for the King_Ralph launcher! Cool! http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/cool.gif

1993 and 2000 were okay years. 1999 however was TERRIBLE!!! Fires, shootings, bomb threats and multiple deaths in the family. Not to mention that Doom was hated by the media. *shudder*
