Will there be a multiplayer community for the new DOOM?

I would say, yes, there will be quite a large multiplayer community for the new DOOM. Why? Well, simply because all of id's games have had massive multiplayer communities, even those which weren't developed for multiplayer.

It goes without saying that many of the current DOOM multiplayer devotees will be moving over to the new game as soon as it's released -- at least I and the DOOMers I call my friends will, as it looks now.

Of course it will have to be a good multiplayer game, if there's ever going to be any large multiplayer community. I suppose one could compare it with Quake2. When id developed Quake2, they focused on the singleplayer aspects of the game, leaving the multiplayer as it was (although with physics and weapon changing delay that could drive a Quake1 player nuts). Despite that, it didn't take long until an overwhelming multiplayer community had evolved.

I seriously hope (and think) that there will be big tournament events with the new DOOM, although perhaps not quite as much as with Quake III Arena. But then again, Quake III Arena can't last forever, and what will then the tired Q3A players do? I'd say they either move over to the new DOOM, or to another game with decent multiplayer. But then again, maybe the most devoted Q3A players will hate the new DOOM. The new DOOM game will probably be as far away from Q3A one can get when it comes to balance of weapons. Thus, I reckon the multiplayer in the new DOOM will be more "old school" than the one we see today in for example Q3A. And that's just what I, and many with me, want.

I would actually go as far as believing that most of the Quake1 players (me for an example) will be moving over to the new DOOM.

Of course I look a lot forward to the singleplayer (which I believe, and hope, will be spectacular), but without a decent multiplayer game I won't survive much longer, and I haven't seen any of those since Quake1 (ok, Quake2 is also a good multiplayer game, but I've never really liked it, since it's too slow to fit my taste).
