So what engine will id be using?
Quake 3 arena's?
There is a good chance that they will but I want a new engine.
One like unreal's when you can have huge open landscapes and still have a high frame rate but also like quake 3 arena's where you have really good detail and special effects.

I haven't seen one official source that didn't say id is using brand new technology. New doom will use its own engine, dude, designed specifically for the game (hopefully)! :)

isn't that gone take a long time
creating your own engine http://www.NEWDOOM.com/ubb/confused.gif
DNF is coming and HL 2 http://www.NEWDOOM.com/ubb/smile.gif
why not take the Q3 or UT engine and adapt it

Yup, in the official press release, id Software mentioned "Employing an entirely new 3-D graphics engine,..." Once again, id Software will step up and revolutionize the gaming industry. I would rather have a completely new engine, even if the new Doom takes longer to make.

I'm hoping it'll be released just before the Summer of 2002. This way, I can get a new PC at that time so I can exceed new Doom's requirements, and also for college. Here's to 2002!

Also I just got rid of my old PC now so I won't get addicted to videogames for the rest of high school...keeps my grades up :)
Then there's this Sega Dreamcast sitting on my floor which I'm using to actually post this message...hrm.

Ironic....this will be the first Doom sequel that features a new engine, unlike the Quake series. All three Quake games had different engines spanning over a period of 3.5 years. (Speaking of which, Quake1's fourth birthday is on the 22nd of June, I think.) Take a look at the differences of all those engines!! Quake, the first true-3D game, still runs like crap in high resolution modes :)

the term "new rendering engine" is kind of generic these days, it means alot of things.
if it says something like OpenGL, then it is using a set standard of drawing routines. every videocard that uses OpenGL must conform to these specs. so quake3 uses openGL, not its own proprietary rendering engine.
the same goes for Direct3D.
what does change, though, are the way they program each peice of it, how it feeds information to the videocard and subsystems. I think that is what John Carmack is talking about;
his efficient coding to make the hardware perform fast.
the latest offerings from companies such as Nvidia and ATI give you a good example of what the 'next generation' rendering engines will do. so start with that, and work your way up.
