If you have any suggestions or have alternate links or anything like that please post and let me know. Also the list here isn't alphabetical....

Top Doom editors:

Doom Builder:
Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista*
Doom, Doom II, HeXen, and Heretic.
CodeImp's editor is up to version 1.1 and it kicks a lot of editing ass! DB has the best 3D mode that puts you right inside your map where you can align textures, copy / paste textures and flats, change light levels, adjust sector heights, and fly around your map like a crazed editing bee of doom, etc...... Of course DB has a cool 2D mode as well making it the best editior out there and it's 100% free! Plus CodeImp released the source so anybody with code experience can go hog wild..........
http://www.doombuilder.com/builder_info.php

[edit] For info on getting Doom Builder to run on Vista see this thread (http://www.doomworld.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40183) CodeImp posted on the Doomworld forum.

DeePsea:
Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP
DooM, DooM II, Duke Nukem, HeXen, Heretic, Quake and Strife.
Lots of doomers swear by it and is one of the most popular editors. DeepSea however isn't a free program and you'll have to pay to get the full version. There is a linedef limitation on the shareware version....
http://www.sbsoftware.com/

WadAuthor:
Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP
DooM, DooM II, Heretic, and Hexen.
Another fine editor that many DooM mappers prefer. This one is also a non-free editor and it has a 15 day limit (not exactly sure of time limit) before it asks you to register..

[edit] Original site is down. Alternate download links: Filefront (http://files.filefront.com/wauthorzip/;7966;/fileinfo.html) :: /idgames (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=11183)

Slade:
Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP [I couldn't find the info but I assume it works for all Windows OS]
Doom, Doom II, Heretic, HeXen.
I never tried Slade myself but it's shaping up to be a nice editor and is still being developed. Like Doom Builder, Slade features a 3D editing mode.
http://slade.mancubus.net/

DoomCad:
Windows9x
Doom, Doom II, Heretic.
I couldn't find DoomCad online or the links were few / dead so I put it on my site. DoomCad 5.1 is what I used to use 90% of the time (now I'm 100% Doom Builder baybee!). Typically you'll want 6.1 so go for that if your looking to try out DoomCad. Remember 5.1 is only good for editing Doom II while 6.1 is good for heretic and the Dooms.... Some sites have said DoomCad is a DOS program. NOPE 5.1 was designed to originally run under Win95 and both 5.1 and 6.1 will run in win95 and win98.. It should also work fine for Win2k and XP.

Grab DoomCad 6.1: /idgames (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=2749)

Deth:
DOS
Doom, Doom II, Heretic.
One of those olde style DOS editors thats still somewhat popular.....
http://doomworld.com/drsleep/heth.htm

Windows Deth/Zeth:
Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP
Don't know much about this one......
http://amberfisharts.com/hosted/zeth/

Why:
Doom, Doom II, Heretic.
Linux/Win95 or newer (thats what it says on the site)
Pate's editor has a lot going for it and is still being worked on.. Current version is 0.99. Also note that in order to run Why on Windows machines, you'll need Python 2.2 for Windows and you can get the link to Python from Pate's site.
http://www.hut.fi/~jpakkane/why/

[edit] Unfortunately Pate is no longer developing Why.

Editing Utilities:

XWE and Wintex
Both XWE and Wintex work wonder in getting inside .wad files and fidling with sprites, textures, sounds, etc......
XWE (Xtendable Wad Editor): http://doomworld.com/xwe/
Wintex: http://www.3ddownloads.com/showfile.php3?file_id=7883

Dehacked and WhackEd2

Both these programs are used to 'Hack' the DooM exe to make all kinda of crazy stuff like invisble Cyberdemons and shotguns that shoot plasma pellets, etc..... WhackEd is the windows version of the famous DOS program. WhackED will run in Windows including ME (or 2000, XP Home or XP Professional).
Dehacked: http://www.3ddownloads.com/showfile.php3?file_id=7855
WhackED 2: Exl's Page On Team Hellspawn (http://www.teamhellspawn.com/exl/index.php?page=whacked2)

Nodesbuilders:

Once you've mad a doom map it's important you run your map through a nodesbuilder... Most older editors do a crappy job of building nodes and can be as slow as hell. Newer editors like Doom Builder come loaded with ZenNode for example...
ZenNode: http://mrousseau.org/programs/ZenNode/
BSP: http://doombsp.sourceforge.net/

Miscellaneous Programs:

Deusf
A handy DOS commandline tool for joining wads and/or merging them into the IWAD. Then can also be easily removed again afterwards at anytime. Vey handy for use with batch files. You'll find it as Deusf.exe in the Wintex4.3 distribution package.
ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/utils/graphics_edit/deutex/wintex43.zip

Texture Design Tools:

Wally:
Weird name, cool program. Used a lot in the Half-Life mod scene but is great for Doom or whatever game your working on... It's great for making bricks, adding rivets and making your textures tile properly plus a bunch of other stuff.
Wally: http://www.telefragged.com/wally/

The Gimp:
It's a paint proggy with cool tool effects and such....

Hidden Menu
Ahhhhh! Now that I have all these editing jobbys my desktop is messier than a rats nest! So WTF can I do about it? Well get Hidden Menu! This is a great program where you can organise all your editing proggys in a wee pop-up list that activates when you move your cursor into the corner of your screen.

Hey Doom Dude, is THIS (http://megawad.newdoom.com/db.shtml) gonna get finished some day? Please? Its a great start man, just need to fix it up some and finish it!

You're linking to an old version of Wintex. The executable is up to 4.7 but you need 4.3 first to run it. I'm not sure what's different with 4.7.

Exl

There's even a WinTex 5.0. Presumably it works without 4.3 too.

Yeah I will do that. Sorry for the long delay but I got burned out on doing all this Doom crap and I stopped right after the 'incident' with the forums and I don't know when I'll get back to it. Sucks.

whats a good program to extract images? I have dmgrapah but it takes ages to extract just one set of sprites. Preferably Id like to edit the sprites and reinsert them without having to type 50 odd lines in the cmd prompt. Are there any windows based programs that can do this?

Abrax
March 8th, 2004, 03:34 PM
DeePsea can do it, under the F7 dialog menu, you can do that there, extract as .wad, .lmp, of.bmp, edit, rename (inside or outside of the program), and merge back inside with the isert lump ito PWAD menu.

Yeah, Wintex is the best one, and you can even edit directly the pictures/textures within your favorite program, without any manipulation (double click the wanted picture, and that's it)!!!
I use it since several years with happyness for DLW's stuff!

I have joined this forum on a whim.
I used to be very keen on creating wad files, and used deu2 almost exclusively.
There was a brief flirtation with doomcad which could make bigger levels but which always put dodgy lines in. Anyway, with the release of doom3, I realise that my lowly P2 doesn't have a hope of running it, and somehow this has rekindled my wad making desires.
I got myself a copy of doom and downloaded this wadbuilder I have heard so much praise for, and you know what ? Wadbuilder won't run. It says I have missing textures. Screw that. Where can I get DEU2 from ? My Doom searches keep turning up dead links for some reason. Don't tell me there have been improvements in the first person shooter genre. I want me, my boomstick, and a dimly lit area with 50 or so rabid critters coming straight at me. Only Doom offers me this.
( oh, alright, I play Halo as well, but primarily for the Flood ).
Any help ?

Why do you worry when you have "Doom Builder"?!? *rolleyes*
Anyway, you can have access to some tools here (http://www.newdoom.com/hosted/dlw/Links.shtml) *munch*

Forgive me, combination of being hazy on my tech and not being in great mood, I should have said that it was Doom Builder I was using. After some fiddling about, I got it cranked up, but it still starts with an error message -

WARNING: Could not find the IWAD file "". Check your configuration!

I only just got this far. Have I mentioned it's been a while since I did this ? I am not very tech literate, but I used to swap a lot of wads. I think it is as tech as I have ever been.
please be gentle with me. :)
ps cheers for links, I will have a proper look at them when I have time.
First I will wrestle with doombuilder 'til I can no longer face it.

grrr. out of stack space ? I don't know what that means. stack space ?
I am already in a crabby mood. Give me back the Deu !!!

No, it's no good. I wanted to build a level to prove I still could, but this is turning into a nightmare. I didn't use to have to worry about configuring IWADs or what have you, I just cranked it up and got designing. I am happy to admit that I am not as tech literate as I would like, but if I am going to have to read a thick manual to understand why I can't even get the bugger to test a three sector WAD to check that I still know how to make doors, then I am going to get no where fast. I will keep looking for a copy of DEU2, until then, cheers for the links.

The website for WadAuthor seems to be dead:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~wc/wauthor/

I'll upload a copy of WadAuthor once I find a version that isn't infected with DooMGoaT's novelty pet virus, which isn't harmful in any way shape or form, but can sometimes be inconvenient. Noted effects are:

Age of Empires II map editor no longer functions,
Unreal Tournament only loads one map, then after that you have to quit and run it again,
Save states for ZSNES are frequently moved to \windows\system where ZSNES can't find them.

Quite possibly the least threatening virus in the history of the internet.

[//Edit]

Oh yes, WhackEd2 has now moved here (http://www.teamhellspawn.com/exl/index.php?page=whacked2) and Doom Heaven has moved here (http://www.teamhellspawn.com/doomheaven), but the utilities page doesn't appear to be finished yet.

It's safely locked away in some zip files where it can do no harm. Now if only I could remember which zip files they were.

Man, who has WhacED. There are like absolutely no Download links for it that I can find. The link to the website that works is just a blank page that says done. I'm trying all these new doom editing tools, and I really like the idea of a more user frindly version of dehacked.

O wait, I didnt see theres a second page. I found a link for it. Hopefully this works.

I've uploaded a few utilities as some of the links in the original post are dead. It's just a folder list at the moment until I get a proper page set up:

Apologies for the double post, stupid forum software won't let me edit the old post.

Anyway, the editing utilities section is more or less finished. All the files are hosted locally, so there's no chance of things disappearing without warning and causing dead links. Hopefully I haven't missed anything important:

I am having some troublke with the wally. I wanted to try a texture, but as soon as i try to put it into a wad it tells me it can't load the wad. any suggestions?

I've updated the first post and fixed all the broken links I could find. Also added a few things that were missing. If anybody has any other items that should be on there please let me know.

I am having some troublke with the wally. I wanted to try a texture, but as soon as i try to put it into a wad it tells me it can't load the wad. any suggestions?Sorry for the late answer. I haven't been in this thread in ages. Heh. Anyhow if your making a texture using Wally, your better off saving your texture as a .bmp and then insert it into a wad using XWE. I don't bother to make textures from scratch with Walley. I use Photoshop, PhotoStudio, etc, to build my texture, then use Wally to manipulate the texture to add stuff like rivets, scratches and make bricks and grooves.
