Well, since the GREAT soundpack of sambo9000 is on my web ftp i thought to launch another thread about it so that newbies easilly can download it.

Soundpack version 2.0 by Sambo9000 (http://members.lycos.nl/projectsofdamnation/soundpack.zip)
(Right-click, d'oh forget it to say it again the first time)

Great work Sambo, are you gonna continue it?

(discuss people;))

What does it contain? Until now, I was completely satisfied with the sound doom has. Does it affect the atmosphere a lot?

Sin4U
January 9th, 2004, 03:13 AM
yep. I can only say try it, you might like it, you might not. But overwhelmingly probably, you will. Aparantly, he tried for a more scary soundset.

its really good. Nice and juicy sound like blood and guts spewing. And the shotgun is awesome...

It's a very good sound pack, though also very different to the original sounds.

But they sound perfect:)

Doesnt really sound doomish... too much quake feeling (and some sounds too :P)

Tyberious
January 10th, 2004, 11:23 PM
I think it needs to loads scary, the zombie pain sound is really different, plus the sounds don't scare me, I think they really need a good shot in the arm and to be kicked up a couple of notches, throw in everything plus the kitchen sink and we have a deal! Cheers!

Sambo9000
January 12th, 2004, 07:26 AM
The Zombie pain sound is the one from DooM 64 and Playstation DooM. I just didn't think that a zombie would scream like a girl everytime he takes a pellet to his arm.

If you guys don't like any sounds just delete them from the pk3 file.

It's a very good sound pack, though also very different to the original sounds. The new version is made to sound as similiar as possible while also sounding modern and realistic. Also I aimed to make it good for both fans of the PC version and the PSX/N64 versions.

Guys stop being so picky and just try it, if you don't like it you can just delete the file again. It was a lot of hard work.

Great work Sambo, are you gonna continue it?Well I have some new shotgun sounds to put in there, but after that version 2 will be pretty much complete. I won't make a version 3 until Kaiser teaches me how to do that programming stuff to get different pickups to make different sounds.

Doesnt really sound doomish... too much quake feeling"Doomish"? Doomish must mean dated, old, and unrealistic then.

Sin4U
January 15th, 2004, 12:11 AM
well, dated and old are the same thing, and unrealistic is good. long as it sounds good, it is good, though. I would like to see what the PSX sound pack is like, though.

Sambo9000
January 15th, 2004, 07:12 AM
The PSX sounds are the same as those in the DooM64TC.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. :)

Sin4U
January 15th, 2004, 10:47 AM
Ahh, thanks, you saved me a dl Sambo. Even those dont have the same tone of Doom, most are much higher pitched...
Note that I dont mean if they dont have the same tone as Doom that I think they are bad, just that they are an alternate pack.

Sambo9000
January 16th, 2004, 03:04 PM
I like some of the PSX sounds, others I prefer the PC ones. A lot of the PC sounds are so fake though that I always stuck to the PSX ones until I made this pack.

DaniJ
January 16th, 2004, 03:39 PM
This pack is great Sambo. I always use it :D

It's just a shame some of it is copyrighted stuff.

The only thing I don't like is the rocket launcher sound. It just kinda doesn't sound right. I know you are going for realisim (which is good*thumbs*) but because the rocket launcher is such a rapid firing gun (ie totally unrealistic) it gets irritating after a while...

But keep up the good work man.

UglyBob
January 16th, 2004, 06:20 PM
Yea i noticed that too... I suggest more bass in alot of the sounds, and more juicy guts exploading and bloody noises. Make it sound like hell is really awful and scary. But other than that, its really good.

From what I can tell, there are sounds from PSDoom, Hexen, Quake, and Quake2. I love the PSDoom sounds, but I don't like the other ones since I feel like I'm playing in those other games. Those sounds are fine for people who haven't played these games before, but for me I like games to have their own unique sounds.

Sin4U
January 20th, 2004, 11:52 PM
I would have to agree with you, since you can recognise sounds so eaisily. Dark Forces death-fall scream is probably the MOST overused sound, ever. apart from the Doom door, of course. If we could find some new sounds, of course it would be great, but there are very few proffesional quality free sounds that every hasnt already heard. not many bloody expensive one's either, actually.

Wicked Anime Kid

sweet, someone is working on ambient sounds. Maybe int he future they cna be integrated into the pack

Sambo9000
January 22nd, 2004, 10:03 AM
The sounds from other games which I used were ones which I could see being used again in other ones. Most of them I've heard in more than one game. I agree that the same sounds being used again can be weird, whilst watching some movies, when I hear them using sound effects I've heard before, it just doesn't seem right.

But the sounds I used from other games we're generic ones I could imagine used in other games too, and some of them we're edited pretty heavily as well. The Doomguy death scream was changed since the overused one(which was actually put in the pack because they used it in PSXDooM), it's now a Quake 3 scream with a sound for the body hitting the floor, but I dunno if it's in this updated version of the pack, cause I'm having a little difficulty following what WAK is uploading, lol.

WAK I hope you included my new shotgun sounds in that version of the pack.

weird...

Uhm did you installed it in the general doomsday directory (not in any of doomsday sub-folders).
It puts the pk3 in data/jdoom folder and the ksa file in doomsday/kickstartprofiles.

So you need to install it in the general doomsday directory (i.e. c:\doomsday)

Nemesis
January 27th, 2004, 07:13 AM

Uhm, go to the kicksprofiles folder and check if the kickstart addon file is there (soundpackage.ksa)
If not use the information i post here and add this into a ksa file (just copy a ksa file and open it with notepad, delete the data and insert the one i gave)

[Addon]

Just my Opinion, but I preffered the shotgun sounds from the old pack, had a lot more "beef" to them if you know what i mean.Yeah they did, but they sorta got in the way of other sounds in the game, which messed up the feel in a way. When you can't hear the nearby monsters roaring over the FOOM of your shotgun, or you can't hear the demons screaming when you blow the shit out of them, then it can be quite distracting.

I also wanted to get rid of the unrealistically hollow "POP" that the pump action shotgun made. The sounds seem to go better with my upcoming weapons pack too.

Sin4U
January 29th, 2004, 11:04 PM
no reason you cant have a low freq with maybe just a little mid freq weapon sounds with high freq monster screams (except the crappy sound systems most ppl have would get their power sucked out by the bass... but then why use a soundpack? :D)
That would make both recognisable. Course, that kinda is what we had before (and I had no probs)

I have problem

Soundpack addon not appearing in Kickstart Addon tab
But all files in right places

Earlier, when I just unpacked all in older installation of Doomsday all works fine and after I cleaned DDay from old model & addons soundpack not appears

lechtansi

carma:

look to see if there is a soundpackage.ksa in your \doomsday\kicksprofiles\ directory, and then double check to see if it contains the same information that WAK posted. With the older way of doing things (adding in sounds/models/textures/music/etc) it was very hard to manage them correctly, so you might have inadvertantly deleted something you shouldnt have. If that still doesnt work, reinstall doomsday in a seperate folder, install the soundpack into that directory, and then tell us if it still happens.

Wicked Anime Kid
January 31st, 2004, 01:06 AM
If the soundpack still doesn't works after done what lechtansi told try putting the soundpack.pk3 into the doomsday/data/jdoom/auto directory and if it doesn't works then i am out of ideas

Wicked Anime Kid

1.09?
Shouldn;t it be 2.10 (you can download it here (http://modelyard.newdoom.com).)
Otherwise just put the soundpack.pk3 file into the doomsday/data/jdoom/auto folder because then it will automatically overwrite the sounds:D

Good work on the Soundpack! A nice upgrade from the Playstation soundpack I was using. The monster sounds are particularly awesome.

I also like how it is all individual WAV files so it is easy to replace sounds with others. I used WinTex to rip some of the sound files out of the Playstation soundpack so I could keep a couple of those that I like better (like the rocket launcher). I also ripped the sounds from Abbs fullpack so I could use his great shotgun sound for the double barrell.

I think in the next version of the jDRP I'm gonna start adding some extra sound slots into the monster and hud weapon THING states. What this will essentially mean is two versions of the configs (one version with unaltered states).

How about we come up with a combined enhanced version of the two packs?

the shotgun/double barrelshotgun dont have enough UMPF!

Have you tried the shotgun sound from Abbs fullpack? You have to extract the WAV file from fullpack.wad to use it with the soundpack. It definitely has a lot of subwoofer oomph, and is a great replacement for the double shotgun, which, IMHO, should be much louder and deeper than the regular shotgun. Abbs shotgun sound has more deep bass than the double barrel from Serious Sam, which was pretty good.

I'll be happy when the game developers playtest everything with quality 5.1 soundsystems with massive subs and cater to us folk with hefty subwoofers.

Sound's great! Maybe what would be best though would be for the next jDRP and Soundpack version 2 to have a reccomendation of using them together rather than as one download? That way my soundpack can still be used without the jDRP, just the extra sounds won't play, and the new jDRP can be used without my soundpack too.

Some sounds I'd like to be able to have are things such as a Q3A 'whoosh' when switching weapons(although they move a tad slow for that), a different sound for the Chaingun from the Pistol sound(so a whirring sound can be added). Footsteps would be nice too. Also if you read the readme file inside the soundpack zip there are some 'future possibilities' describing things I'd like to do if/when possible.

Have you tried the shotgun sound from Abbs fullpack?
My pack contains the same shotgun sound, only with a new reload. It's taken right out of Quake 3, as is Abbs'.

Now that you mention it that would be the best approach.

What I'm planning shouldn't effect the states (I'm not really changing the states other than the sounds they use) in anyway so in theory it shouldn't cause any problems in multiplayer. I'll check with Skyjake first though.

If you can tell me what you'd like to add soundwise I'll check the states and see if it's possible (should be).

Have you changed any states already? If so what have you changed?

Sambo9000
February 19th, 2004, 01:10 PM
I haven't changed any, just added more sounds to audio.ded and changed a few sounds which play with specific states(mostly with the monsters, so that they all make different pain/active sounds rather than the same ones re-used over and over). You should use the ded files in my soundpack as a base, and once I've downloaded the jDRP(that's right, I still haven't downloaded it!) I'll purposely make sure my next version of the pack works nicely with it.

I think the main state I'd like to see changed is the fact that the Chaingun uses the same sound as the Pistol. If you can make the Chaingun use a new sound(e.g. DSCHNGUN) that'd be great, just imagine the whirring engine of the barrels playing as well as the firing sound, and also hearing all the bullet shells dropping, would be great!

Also, I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like to have the menu use it's own sound effect for when you confirm something, that way I can add a bullet shell dropping sound to the Pistol as well without having that sound on the menu(which would be pretty dumb).

Oh yeah, and how about a new state for when DoomGuy jumps? He could have a sort of "HUH!" noise then, lol.

I think that's about it really. Maybe there could be a 'hum' effect for some things, for instance, if you we're to give flames a state, then I could make a little quiet crackling sound for when you're near them, and it would be pretty cool if the Plasma Gun and BFG hummed liek Quake 2/DooM 64.

Other stuff is up to you, I'd be willing to make sound effects for whatever states you add and want me to make sounds for.

DaniJ
February 19th, 2004, 01:34 PM
Thinking about it there is no need for the jDRP (currently) to change any states really. I have made a few very minor changes adding or removing the fullbright flag to THINGS because atm a THING must have this flag set in order to put a light on it *mad*. I think Skyjake is looking at this for 1.8 though.

So the best bet is for you to have the modified states in the soundpack atm. I think if we stick to changing existing states only we shouldn't cause any problems.

BTW do you have a website with a dl link? I want to link you on TheModelYard (http://modelyard.newdoom.com/).
Also, I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like to have the menu use it's own sound effect for when you confirm something, that way I can add a bullet shell dropping sound to the Pistol as well without having that sound on the menu(which would be pretty dumb).
Can you instead change the sound effect used on all the other states? The menu one is hardcoded in DDE.
Oh yeah, and how about a new state for when DoomGuy jumps? He could have a sort of "HUH!" noise then, lol.
I'm not sure how jumping is implemented. In theory it'll be a new state but I'll need to check.

*laugh* I just played the final boss sound from the Doom 2 WAD backwards (since it sounds like someone talking backwards), and heard "to win the game, kill me, John Romero"!

I'm sure this is covered somewhere in the DooM FAQ, but I guessed I missed it. Funny. 10 years after this thing is out, and I just stumbled onto this. I need to crawl out of my cave more often...*crazy*

Nagorak

I like the new weapon sounds and some of the environment sounds, but...I don't know...the new monster screams really don't do anything for me. Part of the glory of the original doom was the high pitched screams when the troopers were killed. Now they just grunt and keel over.

It's weird too, because with the new sounds the weapons "feel" a lot more powerful (even the wimpy pistol, I actually WANT to use it). But then they seem weaker because the monsters don't scream as much.

It might be cool to release some sub-packs with the sounds split into Weapons/Monsters/Player/Environment(doors, etc). I intend to manually break the pack down myself, but it would be more convenient for everyone. Anyway, good job overall! *bug*

Since I have added a near perfect wind down to the Chaingun( http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?threadid=21763 ), could sound be attached to the extra states?

I take back what I said earlier. My only complaint with the sound pack is that the weapons are all just too loud. You can barely hear the monsters because it's all drowned out by the weapon firing. I suppose this could be due to the fact I can't use 3D sound (doesn't work on my Nforce). Anyway, is there some way to edit the pack so the weapons play quieter? It's disappointing not being able to hear the monsters screaming.

I see your point, but the increased weapon volume in the soundpack is more realistic. From my Army experience, if you are firing off rounds with a chaingun (or in my experience, an M-60), you can't hear ANYTHING but the gun until you stop firing. If you've ever fired a shotgun, you can't hear much until a few seconds after your last shot (your ears are ringing).

If you just want to hear the monsters scream in pain, try punching them repeatedly.

Ok, but on the topic of realism-- while you were in the army did you ever fight a Cyber Daemon? ;)

*roflmao* Good one!
Good point though -- I have no idea how loud a Cyber Demon, Pain Elemental, Pinky, or any other monsters should be. So I guess I have to trust the original volume levels from the Doom game. But soldiers, zombies, sargeants, and chaingunners can't be louder than humans (can they?), so I wouldn't expect to hear them over the weapons.

lol, maybe if they sounded like jerry springer or its audience then you could hear them over your gun ;)

Sorry for the late reply, but sorry, what I'm currently using is the Retexture tex's with the high detail pack....

from the screenshots I saw, though, I will be looking for that one, too....

Ok I've got a nice sound of a (real) shotgun. its in a video my mate made so ill rip it out for the soundpack. can't do it right now though as ive got work so ill try and do it after I get home and before I go to australia.

Edit: Having trouble ripping it so it will have to wait till I get back, Which will be 2 1/2 weeks.

So, here's something strange... downloaded the new Sambo Soundpack, and got it running through Kickstart... but the sounds are all in slow motion. Everything sounds lower pitched than it should, and more drawn out than it should, and, consequently, like terrible, digitized crap. Any ideas what might be going wrong? I tried fiddling with the sample rate, but that didn't help. Tried turning 3D sounds both on and off to no avail. Thoughts?

Even if you could its not really playable with the 1.9.0 versions, as you get stuck on walls.

How can a sound pack make you get stuck in walls? Sound packs have nothing to do with the physical map.

How can a sound pack make you get stuck in walls? Sound packs have nothing to do with the physical map.You would think so but the way the sound pack is configured, it overwrites the Thing definitions that ship with jDoom (a big no no). These replacement Thing definitions are missing the changes made to the ones included with jDoom since the sound pack was released.

Its not just getting stuck on walls. That sound pack causes other issues too.

And what daniJ said is the reason it's not available anymore
