Cool, it's regular crispy bitmap dopefish, and crappy blurry jpeg dopefish! Where's the GIF/PNG version? ;)

Is there anyone else who hates JPG and would much prefer PNG?

JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group
PNG = Portable Network Graphics
PDF = Portable Document Format
WAD = Where's All the Data? (thought up by Tom Hall)

I thought you'd find those facts interesting :)

MP3 = MPEG 1.0 Layer 3 Audio
MPEG = Moving Picture Experts Group
GIF = Graphic Interchange Format

Of course these are all things you can find out for yourself (http://www.acronymfinder.com). ;)

And yes, JPEGs do blow chunks, but lossy compression is a necessary evil on this here internet. PNG is pretty much the ultimate image format: 32-bit, lossless, alpha transparency, small file sizes, open source. What more do you need?

Wow, that's a good site! I'll have to remember that one. But the one problem with PNG: older machines do not recognize it. But if you're still using an Apple II, that's your problem and no one else's :P

Also, I've heard of something called MNG (I think) that's like an animated PNG. Never seen one, but if it's real it'd put GIF to shame (darn 256 color limit).

Heh heh, the wave of the future: PNG and MNG!! Then when we see JPGs or GIFs on older sites, we'll just say "that webmaster's livin' in the past!"

PNG will never be a "top choice" to any person who has experience with the internet. Despite the pros to the format, and the quality, it has been associated with America Online.

I always liked JPG's for some reason. :p

Animation

PNG + Animation = MNG

(as bloke above said).

In my humble opinion:
PNG is the best compressed lossless format (up 64bit quality).
JPEG 2000 is the best lossy format.
WMA (with turned off copyright protection) is the best audio format
WMV is the best video format.

BTW how is PNG in any way associated with AOL? - the old AOL browser couldn't even view them.

Why worry about all that when working with a game that only uses 256 colors?

I don't know if PNG's are smaller files than GIF's... Sure not as universal IMO.
