so, i missed the last couple of posts in the thread because of the forum happenings, but i though i would start the thread once again with another question: how many here play/have played d&d? and if so, what ruleset did you use?
edit: oh, i forgot to say, i play on a 3.0 ruleset campaign, but the one i am dm'ing will be 3.5

Can't pinpoint any particular RPG elements, but these are my favorite ones:
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Super Mario RPG (looong time ago)
Diablo II LOD
Summoner
I haven't played any of the new ones like Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind, but I suspect that they're pretty good.
And no, I haven't tried D&D, but I'd like to learn. I think I'd be a good Dungeon Master :D

i have yet to play a final fantasy game, but my wife sure seems to love them. I've played neverwinter nights for about 3 min, and i found it to be quite awesome. i bought it for a friend for christmas, and when he's done with it, i'm going to borrow it and play it extensively.

Just to let you know, once to play D&D you can never go back to any of that stuff up there. And also, you'll know this if you ever play D&D: The Final Fantasy games, Super Mario RPG games, and Diablo games are NOT rpg's. They have RPG elements, like leveling up, but they are missing what the name implies: Role Playing Game. I'm afraid to say this, but you don't play the roles of anyone in FF, as their personality is already created by teh programmers, and in D2 your character can't even talk, so theres no role playing there either. I can't say anything about Summoner though, as i have never played it.
I play some AD&D, but not 3rd edition. I use the 1st Edition rules, as I have tried the other 2 rule sets and found them more restrictive. In case you want to know, i bought the rulebooks at www.svgames.com as a downloadable purchase, for only $5 (u.s.) a book.

i think the expansiveness of a d&d game relies completely on it's dm. there are many rulebooks out there, as well as additions, that can be used at the dm's discretion. in my campaign, i'm going to make up some completely new monsters as well as a prestige class or two. it's all about where the dm's mind can go.

I dont play D&D, but I play Champions, another pen and paper type rpg. The main theme of champions is make a super hero and have fun. But you can run all kinds of stuff with it. You can even run D&D with Champions if you do it right. One confusing thing about D&D is that you have so many different types of die. In Champions you only have the normal six-sided die. I dont GM, but my friend does. He's teaching me though.
My father was a CyberPunk GM, for quite a few years of his life. I took a look at CyberPunk with my friend, and we like Champions better.

We used to play warhammer fantasy roleplay. It was great, we had a band of mixed warriors, lets see..... There was an Elf mage, an Elf ranger, an elf warrior, an elf hunter, and me, a dwarf. As you can see, we were very original with our characters. We had some fun though, I remember one time we argued for half an hour over wether I could kill a skeleton warrior with a man trap. It wasn't the question of how it would effect the skeleton, more how I could use it in a hand to hand fight. We agreed that, just this once, I could open the trap and release it on the grunts head.

haha, i love disputes in games, it makes it all worthwhile getting together with friends, there are so many creative views in the room, and we wonder if my dwarven monk could use the leap of clouds feat and jump 25 feet onto the back of a spider-like monster in order to drive a dagger into the back of it's head. well, i missed the roll, and got stuck to the floor, better luck next time ;)

I had to do a job challenge once. My dwarf was a highwayman, don't ask, I just wanted the cool abilities it came with. I had to rob a stage coach whilst it was moving. I fell off four times, got knocked off twice, and missed completely three times. Needless to say I wasn't in that employment for very long.

yeah, my dm usually only lets us roll once or twice for a check, kinda stinks, but its' also good, because i play with one guy who would keep checking until he got it right, he's an idiot...the funny thing is, his character is a half-orc barbarian, so it fits him very well :p

All my friends were 3, 4, 5 years older than me, so I just got taken advantage of. I got laughed at by a whore for having a tiny penis, eaten by a giant subterranean worm and then the resurrection went wrong and I came back as a pig.

haha@pig, yeah, the guy i mentioned failed to ask for some healing before going into a battle with an extremely high level drow priestess, and he died, and was resurrected as a satyr. now i think that's really cool, but he was really mad, but it was all his fault, so who cares?

Haha in d&d my friend went and jumped blindly across a pitt before checking it out and hit a wire and fell into a bunch of spikes at the bottom. He got resurrected as a Bugbear. LOL

Cyberpunk kicks ass. I love that game. If you're willing to basically write a new set of rules from scratch. check out RIfts. It's got a fantastic setting and stuff but the most pathetic rules set ever. The author's too busy spouting this masterbatory "all of our games are cross-compatible" crap to write rules that don't suck. So everybody with a clue jsut writes their own :p.
