I found him to be very brave. After all he broke up with one of the most successful bands in the genre, because he stood by his wife. It was a decision for love, rather than money, something you won't see often in show- / music-biz!
And Soulfly's sound and music definitely is not worse than Sepultura's was!

I don't think it's mainstream. I like the various influences Max embeds in his music, mainly the typical brazilian touch. And of course the power he puts into his songs. You can almost imagine how much hate he feels for those who murdered his son, when he sings, no, screams about them! His anger about the system, the believe in god, the love for his family and friends...
His music is so hard, yet emotional, it's his valve for his feeling, his way to tell the world what he has to say! And you can feel it whenever you hear it: It's music from deep inside, it's his mind layed open, as a message and a warning. That's why I like his music so much!!!
